Loose mystery hose

Hi all,

Yesterday I saw that I had a loose hose dangling from the back of my truck coming off the axle housing. I got under the truck to see if I can plug it back in, but I don't know where it got loose from and what it's for. I'm going to try and post some pictures to see if any of you can point me in the right direction and tell me what its for. Thanks in advance for any help.

Your pictures did not show up, but it is probably the vent hose for the rear differential. It is usually tied up high to the frame rails or the bed to keep water out of it. There also should be a small filter on the end of it so dirt does not enter it.

Edit: I just clicked on the Picassa link and saw the pictures, I am sure it's the vent.

I'd say it's a vent hose. Looks like a dana rearend, what kind of truck is it? (out of curiosity) Usually the vent hose will have a breather cap on the end and be attached to or near the frame somewhere.

Well I can tell its a Ford Super Duty. I think the others are right and its the breather for the rear axle. Usually held up high with a filter on the end to keep dirt and water out.

Vent line for the rear axle. There is a little clip on the drivers side frame rail that holds it up. Just got done re-adjusting mine the other day.

No doubt it's the vent line. If you suspect any water or dirt entered that line you may want to check/replace the diff. fluid...
