Los Vegas Worth A Trip?

Bob, I'm assuming that you've been to that convention center that is pretty well attached to (just behind) the Hilton? I was there a couple of months ago. That place is huge! Just like that "Hilton" sign. I stood there and wondered what that "Hilton" sign out front cost.

I'm staying at the Bellagio next week on a business trip. It looked neat from the Venetian and from the mini Eiffel Tower. I'm hoping that the Bellagio is nice. Their water display is impressive. Is that indoor canal ride with the amazing ceiling that makes it look like you're outside in the Parisian or Venetian? It was amazing to just walk around in that place! I'm staying at the Luxor sometime later this spring. It's sort of at the end of the strip if I remember correctly. I've only seen it from a helicopter tour I was on last time I was out there late last year.

By the way, until I took that 4 1/2 hour helicopter tour, I never realized that the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and Lake Mead were so close to Las Vegas. I'd previously been in awe of just the attractions along the strip. There are many more reasonably priced ways to see the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam. I'd certainly take one of those if you haven't seen those places in person. The sights are honestly breathtaking! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You could spend weeks in Las Vegas and not "see everything" there. There is truly something for everyone. Temper what I say with the knowledge that I really, really like Las Vegas. Add my voice to the chorus recommending Blue Man Group, especially if you have kids with you. It's one of those rare shows with something for everyone you can enjoy equally with a date or your children. If you're going to be there on a Sunday morning and are church goers check out the non-denominational service at the House of Blues with an incredible gospel choir and buffet breakfast (only in Vegas).

Think there is a pretty good little known ski hill just a few miles to the west.

My wife and I don't gamble at all other than the ten nickels I put in the nickel machines. I played for about twenty minutes. But my wife and I have been out there three times and still have not got in all the things we wanted to. The shows at night are great. Hoover dam and other things in the area will keep you busy. One day??, it can't be done.

The only thing you may want to watch espeicially with the kids is at night there is a lot of people handing out flyers that you may not want your kids to see. If you stay in a group with your family they more than likely will leave you alone.

I had the good fortune of having and Aunt and Uncle that lived in Las Vegas a few years ago and they knew what time to see the free attractions at each of the hotels. The ships have a cannon fight at Treasure Island every hour and the Volcano erupts at the Mirage, the white tigers are beautiful, the statues do a skit at Ceasar's Palace, the old cars at Emperial Palace. Lots of new stuff I haven't seen but I would highly recommend you see all of it you can. Just seeing the lights at night are worth the trip, light bulb changers have to be in high demand in Las Vegas. Some of the best shows I saw were free and came in the coupon books.

Something not mentioned here - a tour of the Nuclear Test Site run by the Department of Energy. No personal experience with this, but has been commented on by others as being worthwhile.

Dargo, yup I'll be in that convetion center. But there are 2 big centers out there. You'll like the Bellagio. It is a little more peaceful than some of the other places, more refined too. I've been there a couple times and other than the casino itself, I could live there.

I was there a few years ago. Stayed at Circus Circus with a buddy who got a great rate. It was way too far from everything and I wouldn't recomend it just because of it's distance from all the attracitions.

You can get an idea of hotels and prices from Orbitz.com or just about any other travel site. I'd recomend printing a map of the strip with the list of hotels in that area.

If you can stay within walking distance of the strip, then you wont have to deal with parking and traffic.

I didn't see Hoover Dam and regret it. Next time for sure!!

I did go to the Grand Canyon on a seperate trip and wouldn't recomend it unless you are in the neighborhood. It's a long, one way road, that's off the beaten path. You'll kill an entire day getting there and back, just to spend a hour looking at the canyon.

Not to nock the Grand Canyon, but if you're just gonna take a scenic photo, I'd delay that experience for awhile.
