Well, today We had to put down our beloved Shepherd/lab mix. He was my stepson's first dog when we built our house up here in the sticks 13 years ago. He was our bear and coyote repellent, our babysitter for our two younger daughters, our security system and the offical porch "holder downer".
He only left our farm 3 times in 13 years. Twice for porcupine quills that needed a vets attention and just recently for a misdiagnosed (by me) absessed tooth which turned out to be jaw cancer.
Since he was such a home body, the wife and flat out refused for his last breath to be in some unfamiliar vets office. Not to mention he was a big dog, over 100 lbs, and flat out refused to get into any vehicle. He would do anything to NOT get in the truck, up to and including biting the holy crap out of me if need be!! lol.
We had a problem finding a vet that was willing to come to our farm and perform this undesireable task. We finally called our horse vet and asked him and he agreed to help us out. The vet looked him over and agreed it was time for sure.
We will miss our "Jeter Pup" He was dearly loved.... ( yes, he was a huge Yankee fan....lol )
