I would think a non-collapsable hose would be essential, is that so?

Rather than take the 20' hose off the bib and put one of the 50' hoses on to go 30', she'll put the 50 on the 20. I've seen her string 200 feet of hose together to go 60' /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif That's usually about the time I need one and she's got them all strung together running around every fence post we have. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Everytime I see a hose reel, I think about buying one and putting 200' of hose on it for her. Now that I know where I can get a good metal one, I'll be buying one before the end of the week. Ya I know, it won't solve the hose wrapped around the fence posts, but maybe I can get her to role it up once in awhile /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually she came home Saturday evening and brought the little yappy dog with her. I swear that dog has more frequent flyer miles than I have! She leaves again Sunday and is threatening to leave the little yappy dog home this time. I've been trying to convince her that the dog really will miss her a lot. Worst case senario is that I will show up one day before she leaves with a new "shock" collar in X-Small size. . . I suspect she will take him with her if I do that /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
As for the hose reels, they really are very nice. I really hate stuff that doesn't work. This hose reel works. The one design flaw is that it kinks the hose at the connection point, but like I wrote, I fixed that with a reinforced hose end connection piece.
In order to eliminate the KINK at the connection point I installed one of the things in the attachment.
I also hate crummy hoses. The BEST hose that I have found it made by FISKARS. They have a very large plastic connection on each end. At first I was very skeptical about the plastic end pieces but I have been using 2 of the Fiskars hoses for the past 2 seasons and love them. The end connections are big enough to grab with your whole hand, it is not like trying to connect up hoses with just your index finger and thumb to tighten the end connections!!! The hose on the reel in the photo is NOT one of my Fiskar's hoses.

I have one similar to this that I bought at Home Depot at the end of last season for approx. $50. I have probably broken more hose reels than anyone I know. Haven't broken this one yet, I work it hard with 200' of heavy rubber hose just about every day. I need one I can pull around with me, I have quick connects on all my hose gear.
Link didn't work trying to fix it. Home Depot wouldn't support linking, I did a screen capture and attached the file.

Bob, this thread strikes me a a bit funny for a number of reasons. I've had plenty of cheap hoses break, and most of the hose reels I've seen, that other people had, didn't last either. So down on the farm, I had expensive hoses, but no hose reels. Instead, I hand coiled them and had the cheap metal hangars on posts and on the side of the shop building. So, when I had to move back to town, temporarily in an apartment, I sold all of that kind of stuff. Then I bought this mobile home; couldn't decide whether we were going to be here very long, so I bought a cheap plastic cart type hose reel from Home Depot; $30. Then I bought three of the cheapest 50' garden hoses WalMart had; $4.95 each. I figured for what I spent, if I had to throw them away after a year, that would be fine. Now I do use good Nelson brass quick couplers on everything, so I've got more money in quick couplers than I do in hoses and reel. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif But after more than two years, not a single leak. I really expected the hoses to blow out in a year or less, but everything is holding up great so far. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Bird . . . I agree & disagree. On the hose, the Fiskars hose (not in my photos) is a modest price hose, but it is the BEST hose I have, even better than the very heavy and twice the cost professional grade hose in the pictures I posted. I think sometimes you don't have to spend the most to get the most, and to me the end pieces of the Fiskars hose is so superior that it makes up for its light weight.
On the hose quick connects, I don't like to use them because they restrict the flow too much. A 5/8" hose, choked down to about a 1/3" quick connect in a couple places is not capable of flowing as much water as an unrestricted 5/8" hose. But that is just my choice, I understand why others use them.
On the cheapo hose reels, they are just frustrating junk and I hate using stuff that doesn't work well. Too many of them leak, usually in multiple places, and too many of them cannot handle the weight of 200' of hose and stay together. In the long run, they cost as much, or more, than a quality reel. JMHO.
