Love or hate your Deere 5000 series?

I bought a 2014 Tier 2 JD 5055d two wheel drive tractor and have had it just over a year. I use it to cut, ted, rake and square bale hay. I pull the baler with a wagon behind. Also bush hog with it and pull a 7 ft no till drill. When not doing that, I'm spraying with a 3pt sprayer, 3pt fertilizer spreader or using it as a firewood hauling truck with a 3pt mounted carry-all.

Had a wire rub a bracket and shorted a fuse, dealer fixed it ASAP. Knock on wood, it has been a very good tractor and I have worked it hard.

It is a very basic tractor. I consider it more of a utility farm use tractor vs some of the newer, lighter, camp/home owner use type tractors that have a lot of creature comfort features and more cost with it.

You can't get the 5055d any longer as it has been replaced with a full tier 4 5055e model for 2015.

I'm satisfied with my JD.

Bill

Just read my thread in JD owning/operating....I think you know how I feel about the 5000 E series. :)

If you are looking for a tractor for tillage or pulling, be sure you compare machine weights. The Kubotas in this size range are significantly lighter than the E's and even more so than the M's. . .
I have to agree with RNR.
My 5085M weighs nearly a ton more than a Kubota M9540. In fact, my NH TN70A (open station) weighs as much as the M9540 (cab)! You can have all the HP in the world, but you have to put it to the ground to use it.
Also, for maximum HP, the Kubota is rated at 2600 RPM's, the JD at 2200. So the Kubota is using a smaller engine, turning at considerably higher engine speeds to develop it's power.

Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not kicking the Kubota. They are fine tractors. But, be sure you are comparing apples to apples. Not (green) apples to oranges. (pun intended) :D

LOVE IT!!! As far as my 5M is concerned, it's the finest tractor that I've ever owned. I've had it for 5 years and put over 700 hours on it, and it's not my only tractor. I use it primarily for haying.
To answer your question, would I buy another one? You bet. As Yogi Berra would have said, "if I had it to do all over again, I'd do it all over again."

I'm following this thread, because I'm looking at the possibility of buying a low-hour 5083E. If you have any advice, see my thread here: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-owning-operating/349317-5085m-compared-5083e-input-owners.html#post4313749

I always read Kubota's were lighter. I actually weighed a M7040SU on a truck scale. Sales lit said it weighed 4608 lb. It actually weighed 7300 lb (no fluid, but optional cast centers and LA1153 loader subframe)

I don't think the cast centers (700lb combined) and loader sub frame made 2700 lb....

Kubotas scales must be off then. It was a 1700lb difference between the 5083e I bought and the 8560 kubota. I can't argue with your results though?!

i was actually surprised on the Kubota since the weight in the sales lit for our 40 HP smaller 2wd was 5000lb and it actually weighed 7520lb with loader and fluid in the rears. Figured the Kubota was going to be well under that weight....

I wonder if Kubota literature has the DRY SHIPPING weight from the factory, and minus wheels/tires

My M9540, open station, LA1353 FEL, Radial tires, WW Fluid in the rears, Cast Iron rear centers, 300lb rear cast weights weighs 10,850 lbs.

I've always said Kubota has a high HP/WT ratio. For some applications that's a plus. For AG work it is not. In a Kubota you need to move into the M110X or something similar. It will weigh with the high HP end of the M Deere and cost about the same.

The M series cost is why I have a Kubota. I really wanted an M Deere. But could not justify the $7000 difference in price. I wasn't buying for AG purposes. I was buying for Utility purposes.

And like Big Foot 62 said, I'm not kicking Deere. There's just enough differences between an M Deere and an M Kubota that they can't fairly be compared. And just like him, I'd buy another M Kubota with no hesitation.

I don't disagree at all. I have an L that I'm very happy with and I would have bought an m over the e but the 10k price difference wasn't happening. I was looking for a more ag biased tractor since heavy haying was in the forecast as well as a horse operation and large tract to maintain. Like everything in life there is compromise. I really needed several different pieces of equipment but this was the best fit for the price. I would buy it again but I'd def go for 10 more ponies.

I have a 5M and so far it's been a great machine. I use it mostly for loader work and as heavy as it is, I wish it were still heavier. I have the rear wheel weights and usually hook up a box blade for rear weight (need to get my rears loaded and a proper ballast box). The e-pto is great as it allows you to run it at much lower rpm when using brush hogs etc.

My field work with my Kubota is 90% PTO related. Wish it had an E-PTO equivalent.
