I once had a walk behind rotary mower that had a triangular plate under the deck that was attached to the rotating spindle with a sickle mower blade bolted onto the end of each point.

I made a mower somewhat like that with a pair of disc mower blades attached at the ends (with the matching stock bolts for the particular blade which allows them to swivel if the hit something solid) of a piece of 2" wide by 3/8" thick steel plate. I found the center of the bar and then used a rotary table on my mill to cut each end equidistant from center and also to locate each cutter's mounting hole which eliminated balance problems. I cut out the front of the push style mower deck enough to allow the blades to protrude so they were the first thing that would make contact with whatever you wanted to cut down.

It worked great for cutting down really large weeds, small trees and just about everything that a regular mower wouldn't handle.
