I have a barn that is around 400 ft from my house, it pulls of the same well pump that the house does. I want to add a water system to the arena, but the pressure is to low in the barn. Can i add an expansion tank and some kind of pump? What can I add in the barn to increase the pressure?

Would something like this do the trick?

So basically my existing line would act as the "well" and supply this pump with the water for it to repressurize?

1)booster pump

2)pressure tank

3)run new (bigger) water line

I guess i should have specified that running another/bigger line is probably a long term solution, but not the one i am looking for as it would require a little more than i was hoping to put into it. Really i am trying to figure how to set up a tank and a pump correctly, or what type to get.

Why is the pressure low at the barn?
If you are using a frost free hydrant, a lot of times the plunger shaft gets out of adjustment which restricts the flow, making you think the pressure is low when it is not.

It is a matter of supply and demand. Add a large non-pressurized tank at the barn to collect the low-pressure/low-volume water from your existing system (maybe fill-up over night). Then add a booster pump to the outlet of the big tank. Lots of higher pressure/higher volume water until you drain the collection tank. :)
Start all over for the next cycle.

1- What is the water PRESSURE at the house?

2- What is the water PRESSURE at the barn?

3- Exactly what is the fixture that has poor performance? (Picture please)

4- What size is the 400' pipe, of what material and how old is it? If you
do not know measure the OD of the pipe.

5-Was the pressure OK at one time or has it always been bad?

6- What is the elevation difference (up or down too) between the house and the barn.

HERE is a nice lil gauge w/ tattle-tale. (No need for tattle tale but in the future it can be nice)

What is your static water pressure? If your low pressure is because of a small pipe size you may have good pressure but a lot of loss to friction. I have seen a bladder tank installed to give good pressure for the capacity of the tank. Say if your static pressure was 50#PSI but when you open the valve it drops to 5#PSI you could install a 20 gallon bladder tank and have 10 gallons or so before your pressure would start to drop off. Just a thought.

I would get complaints on low water pressure and almost everytime the pressure guage readings were nearly identical at all locations.

What I found most of the complaints were really about volume... unless there was a significant vertical varition from high to low.

Volume is often a restriction problem... something in the line or length of the run.
