I have a L 4200/GST

I need to know if replacing the rear axle seals is a DIY project.

Don't see why not... where are you leaking?

rear axle seals leak,
I have just drained engine and trransmission/rear end, in preparation to doing 800 hr. service.
I'm going after oil in the morning, and seals if its not going to be to bad.
It does'nt leak that bad, I never have had to add trany fluid, it just makes an unsightly mess on inside of tires and wheels.
Also, what are the specs on valve clearance, that is also an 800 hr service.

Valve clearance: 0.18 to 0.22 mm, 0.0071 to 0.0087 in.

Got wheels off and rops off and I can't see that the seals are leaking. I think that the leak was from the bolts that held the rops on. Is that possible? They don't go all the way thru into the axle housing, but I'm wondering if they go far enough for a pin-hole in the casting to cause the leak on the left side. It seems like all of the oil was in or around that location.

Going to put fluid in tomorrow and watch for leak before I start putting things back together

I can't place how it would leak there.... But if you think it is leaking you can use a RTV type sealer on the threads when you resemble...
My L4200 has a cab, so I have no rops mount.... KennyV

Guess what it was leaking at the mounting holes for the ROPS,

I filled it with fluid and the took the $42 RTV back to the implement dealer and when I got back there was a little puddle of oil on both sides.

Yes you read right $42 RTV (gray) it is a special gasket sealer to put the axle housings together.

I then took your advice and used red RTV on the bolt threads when I reattached the ROPS. Got one wheel and tire on and going to do the other one tomorrow. I have my fingers crossed that this fixes the oil leak.
