My pleasure.

Just called down to the LWS for info and to get a number on a O/A or O/P cutting outfit (tired of having to borrow/ask others)

Guy I spoke to wasn't a fan of O/P, but was a fan of Victor torches. The price on the outfit wasn't bad ... but man, the price on the tanks was rude (twice the cost of the torch outfit)

Anyways, when I mentioned that one of my biggest interests was just being able to heat stuff up, he suggested I just pick up a propane weed burner for $50 (or less)

Great idea

Doesn't handle the need for having a cutting torch for cutting, brazing, etc., but it does handle the heating aspect.

Good guys down there.

Yep, bottles are costly. I've got seven. Bought them all at farm sales.

I have two Victor torches. I think they are the Cadillac for the home shop guy. My large torch is Model H315FC. It's my go-to torch. A bit heavy and bulky but man will it cut!!!! The smaller one, can't remember the model, is handier for light work. Cuts fine, but is slower on thicker metal or with a rosebud tip.

AirGas is the company that serves my area. They have an online site that I use sometimes. Their nearest store is 60 miles away. I'm not a commercial user, just home shop use. Last time I was in their store I was getting some expendables for my Plasma Cutter and some Welding Rod. I told the guy helping me that I really appreciated them treating me like "I was somebody". With a big smile he said "you are". I'm loyal to them.

Yeah ... I can't remember what I paid for the one 75/25 that I own but it sure doesn't seem as though it was all that much. Of course it was quite a while ago.

I think I'll probably be scouring CL to find the tanks for an O/A rig, if not the torch as well.

This was the only one that had what seemed to be a reasonable asking price when I looked just now:

oxygen acetylene tank - tools - by owner - sale

Of course, being CL, no real info on exactly what they were offering ...

The outfit the LWS quoted on included the 100FC torch ... still need to research it and do my due diligence on it.

I guess we're pretty lucky - we have three within 10 miles that I know of (Matheson Valley Gas, Praxair, and Airgas) ... there could be more.

The one bottle that I own was purchased from Airgas, back when I was just getting started.

I've never had a problem with them, and they have treated me fine as I recall ... I just started going to Matheson when I found out where they were. Both are about the same distance - AirGas may be a little further away - but AirGas is in town and Matheson is out on the edge of a suburban/rural area. Less traffic and stoplights to get there.

Picked up the weed burner yesterday and hooked it up. It was ... enlightening ...

The Woman had stopped by the shop on her way in from work, and was kind of excited ... as she had mentioned wanting one of these for weeds, melting ice on the walkway into the house, etc.

So I lit it up for her and adjusted the flame with the control knob ... she was not impressed. Then I squeezed the trigger lever and her eyes bugged out ...

It went from her being excited about a new tool ... to being worried I'd burn the place down or self-immolate ...

After she left I ran it for a few minutes on the piece of 3/8 x 2 1/2 flat I was trying to bend. I was able to bend it slightly (with great effort), but was not able to get it cherry red.

Could be that I didn't have the work positioned correctly in the max heat zone of the flame ... but it seems to me that the flame pattern is just way too large. I could probably set something up with a couple of fire bricks to confine the heat into the target area ... but that could be a little awkward and unwieldy.

For $15 I'm sure it will have it's uses ... but I'm not sure bending steel will be one of them.

One thing is for sure ... it will be handy to take the chill out of the shop on a really cold morning, until the stove gets going. During the time I ran it, the air temp in the shop (32 x 28 x 8) went from 78F to 91F ... :D

I've never ran one, just witnessed them in action. Never thought they could be used to heat and bend metal. Tin maybe. As you said, can't concentrate the heat enough. Justifiably so since they are designed to distribute heat over a large area. :)
