2005 Cub Cadet LT 2042
Last week I purchased a LT2042 shaft drive from a Cub Cadet Preferred Dealer. On the first .8 hours, while following the manuals instructions, on three occasiions, a large amount of white smoke came from the exhaust. It wasn't blue smoke like oil usually is. It has the Kohler Command 18. Since this is unusual in my mind. I was wondering if anyone else is having similar problems. My last mower was as Snapper 12hp with a B&S and I never had anything like this happen. Otherwise, I feel the shaft drive is the way to go. It is good to read a forum where alot of experience is appreciated. Thanks. Skysoldiervn /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I Know you made a very good choice in a tractor,I have the last year model the 2180 with the 18 hp vanguard.I think if you choke it to long you will get white smoke,or if you over filled the oil, might be the cause.I have over 500 hr on my engine!I might be wrong, but I think white smoke is for oil and blue is for fuel.

500 Hours, HOLY CRAP! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I have the 2180 like GreenQuality as well and if you fully choke it, you'll get a puff of white smoke on startup. I wouldn't worry about it, try it with a little less choke, I find on my Vanguard it only needs 1/2 choke to light up. The white smoke is just from too rich a fuel mixture, you shouldn't be seeing that when its running. You've got the cast iron tranny which is super sweet.

Did it do the puff of smoke on startup or under-load on the fly? Like the other gents said, a puff on a cold start is normal. Smoke on the fly might be because the engine has too much oil in it. Check the dipstick just to make sure it's not way overfull. Slightly above the full line is fine.
G/luck

I have just purchased a new LT 2042 myself several weeks ago. I get a little white smoke on occasions when I first start it. From full choking. My last cub (1325) did the same thing. Nothing to worry about when starting.
It is a great tractor except for the 3 in 1 blades that came with it. Does a poor job of mulching! I put on the high lift blades that came with the bagger and it mows great! Lift up the side chute and let it fly! Purchased the front brush gaurd and some chrome "baby moons" hub caps to set it off. Looks as great as it mows now!! Only other problem I had was after the first mowing it died on me an wouldn't start. It had a ventless gas cap on it. Took awhile for the Case/IH dealer to find the problem! Love the shaft drive too! Good luck on yours!

look in the body cavity under your tilting seat for a plate/decal with the machine's FULL model number and serial number. Write those numbers down and go to this website: PDF Manual Web Archive
Enter those numbers, follow instructions to get free d/l of owners manual PDF file and possibly other files of interest on that tractor.
