should I lube my 16 disk harrow immediately before or immedtaely after using (or both) ...it is exposed to rain when not in use (i.e. not under cover)

Seems either before or after would work, but not necessary to do it both (unless you just like to do it).

I can't imagine it will de-grease itself while sitting outside, but I like to grease everytime before using the equipment, and then I know it is ready to go.

Frank,

If your disc harrow is like mine, the first lube will take nearly one tube of grease!! I was amazed. It appears as though the bearing and axles are not sealed so I would think a liberal amount of grease before each usage will go a long way.

If you ever take one apart.. it will scare you... it is a device intended to wear out by design.... the grease just prolongs its torcher...

Are you supposed to keep pumping until the grease squirts out some where? I used a whole tube the first time, and still never got it to squirt out anywhere. Then I put 3 or 4 pumps in each fitting again before using it all day yesterday - still nothing came out.

Alan,

Keep on pumping!!! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Like I mentioned earlier, I used a whole tube of grease before I saw any lube coming out of the "bearings" (a liberal use of the term).

My disc does not have any grease fittings to grease. I was wondering what brands of discs you guys are using that have grease fittings? Mine is said to have sealed bearings (a monroe-tufilne), and the dealer explained to me that this was preferrable in a disc as the non-sealed bearings would always be full of dirt. Does anyone have any thoughts on this issue? Could be that my dealer was just trying to sell this particular disc, but his honesty about other issues makes me think that he was telling me his honest opinion.

Last week at an auction, I picked up (2) disc harrows… 6 ½’ tow units… so I had to take them apart to put the “halves” in the back of my truck…

So… two trips later, I asked my 12/13 year old nephew if he would grease one for me… “I’d love to Uncle John… but how do I grease it…?”… I showed him quickly what to do and look for and proceeded to unload the second disc from my truck with my Dad…

We got done unloading, and I looked over at my nephew still greasing… /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif I walked over and asked “How ya doing buddy… you’re making this like new for me…” He indicated everyone was greased on this “half” except this last one… just kept going and nothing came out…” As I looked at it… I saw a half of pound of grease in a ball on the ground that came out the back (versus the sides)… He looked somewhat perplexed, stared at it and asked…”How’d that get there…?” /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

International's disc were like that. I have never heard of any problems with them as the dirt is what hurts the bearings. It gets inside and as the disc keeps turning the dirt wears away at the steel. I have a 6' Taylor Way disc that has grease fittings and the one gang siezed up and when I tore the bracket down it was caked with dirt. I guess what I am saying is if the dirt can not get in there it is a good thing. I have never had or heard of any problems with the sealed bearings and discing generates a lot of dust that will find its way into vulnerable parts.

As for greasing before or after I do both as it works any dirt out that might have found its way in during use. Get the dirt out before it hardens and avoid any problems.

Sealed bearings are preferable.
