I learned from another source that adding a bushing is a possibility, Rockman. Good thought!
In addition to a grease gun, I now have an oil can containing gear oil. It gets applied every 2 hours any place where I feel there is not sufficient grease penetration (based on the advice of several people).
I eventually found out that the problem with getting grease into the swivel pin zerks was a bad grease gun nozzle (at least in part). It kept getting worse until no zerks anywhere would accept grease.
I didn't think it was the grease gun, because I could get two or three pumps before pumping became impossible. However, when I noticed that I had to relieve pressure on the nozzle to get it off the zerk and grease then flowed back past the nozzle, I realized that pumping was just building up pressure in the flexible hose. New nozzle, no problem. I have not disassembled the old one yet to see what the problem is.
Thanks for all the great suggestions, useful for this and other situations.
