It really makes me angry when people start spouting off about how stupid someone was and even a little common sense could have changed the outcome. If you can't think of a single example in your own life where you did something stupid and the results could have been a lot worse - then you are either a liar or have a very bad memory.

Sean.

I agree...the OP made a mistake and he paid dearly for that mistake. He's lucky to be alive to remind us of how quickly working on equipment can go wrong...

I wonder how many of those folks criticizing the OP leave their ROPS down, or don't use the seat belts...

Really?! Sorry you were hurt, glad you're not dead. BUT, how does anyone end up working on a starter on a gear tractor, with the tractor in gear, without disconnecting the battery negative post's cable?
This kind of 'accident' is totally preventable with just the bare minimum of common sense, and safety precautions in place before doing any wrenching....
BTW, those who disconnect seat switches and similar safety devices should get what they deserve when/if things go wrong, and hopefully not end up hurting an innocent bystander in the process.

A little harsh there old sport. Ya get too high up on that stump you might just fall off yourself someday.

Thanks, Gary, for sharing your experience so we can (hopefully) learn from it.
Sorry to hear about your injury - thankfully you have good people and services available to get your hip repaired.
Keep on top of the PT - it's going to be rough and you may get sick of it, but it's how you'll recover the use of your leg, so tough it out. Good luck and keep us posted how you're doing - it'll be a reminder, for many of us, to check what we think we know when it matters!

Get well soon.

I, for one, have made similar dumb mistakes. I had my JD 2305 fall on my me during maintenance. Yes it was preventable, doesn't take away the pain. Don't feel to bad.

If you can't think of a single example in your own life where you did something stupid and the results could have been a lot worse - then you are either a liar or have a very bad memory. If I'm honest - I would probably have trouble shortening my list down to my top 100 stupid decisions/actions.

Gary - I know you feel dumb about what happened - you've said as much. I commend you for coming on here and telling your story to remind the rest of us. I apologize that some of us feel compelled to judge and criticize. You would think we could offer advice and solutions without trying to stomp on someone.

Get well. I hope all of your injuries can be healed. Physically, mentally and financially. Thank you for the wake up call.

Sean.

Well said Sean. It takes courage to admit mistakes in a public forum. If you helped just one person be a LITTLE safer THANK YOU.

Wishing for pain, misery & death. That's a pretty harsh and bizarre wish onto someone.
