I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but my 2005 6x4 JD Gator seems to have different sized lug nuts on one rear wheel. The thread is the same and the lug nuts are all marked "BM" but one has a smaller head than the others on one wheel. I just bought another second hand rear axle with lug nuts and they are the small small head variety. Did something change along the way with the head size of the lug nuts? Can I use the small ones?

It could be something as simple as somebody lost a lug nut, and went to Autozone and picked up lug nuts, and they happen to be a smaller hex than the OEM nuts. If the screw on I wouldn't be afraid to use them.

Yes, something changed. Early Gators used the JD20 bolt (They are called 'bolts', not 'nuts'.) with a 16mm hex head.
Now they use the larger headed VG12353 on the TH6x4 Gator. It has a 18mm or 19mm hex I think. Same thread though on both so they are interchangeable. I prefer the larger head as it has more contact area with the rim on the bevelled area - which is why they changed to it.
Someone has replaced one of yours and been supplied with the earlier type. A common error at the Parts Counter.
