My 2007 M5040 4x4 tractor (with front loader) acts like the transmission is slipping when backing up. I checked the hydraulic / transmission fluid and it was a little low, added fluid but it did not help.

Any ideas?

It is.....I just bought the tractor on Friday and it only has 200 hours....i just read in the manual that I should not use the clutch when changing from forward to reverse...... do you think it is taking time to shift in and when i accerate the sych does not have time to change? I gues I should not be using the clutch to change direction on the shuttle shift?

Any other Ideas?

Synchronized Shuttle Shift or Hydraulic Shuttle Shift?

It has the 4 gears with a Forward and reverse on the stearing wheel.....

Both Synchronized Shuttle Shift or Hydraulic Shuttle Shift have a steering column mounted "shuttle shift" lever. On a Synchronized Shuttle Shift, you use a foot clutch to change direction. On a Hydraulic Shuttle Shift, you can use a foot clutch or the hydraulically activated clutch via the "shuttle shift" on the steering column.

The engagement on a hydraulic shuttle shift feels less precise than the synchronized due to the hydraulic clutch pack.

Are you getting slippage during the shift or after you are well under way?

EDIT: I just remembered that foreman Etexas has an M5040 and will know all about your tractor.

Likely a pressure problem, either a valve is leaking or possibly a leak in a clutch pack. Doubt it is the main clutch as it would slip in forward gears too.

Anyway I could check to see if the valve is leaking or do you have to remove the transmission?

How about a leak in the clutch pack?

Could these be simiple fixes.....

Valve would be on the side of the tranny somewhere and should be easy. Clutch pack not so easy. It would have to come out meaning taking the tractor apart. You dealer or someone with proper gauges should be able to tell if the pressures are out.
It maybe as simple as adjusting the valve.

yup, kubo man has it right....bet you it's an adj on the shuttle shift (hyd) on the column mount.....can be adj for forward or reverse, just adj for fully engaged either way.......happened on my 7040 from fac....you may be able to do yourself....

Like the others have said... Your problem is most likely due to a valve not applying full pressure to the clutch pack when you do a reverse shuttle... You will need the WSM for that tractor & pressure gauge to find the problem...is anything interfering with the linkage movement toward reverse on the shuttle?

BTW... You are right about not using the foot clutch on shifts... You should let the wet clutch pack do the work, It will not wear down like a dry clutch with repeated application... KennyV

Checked and nothing hanging up with the leavers.

Basiclly after I change from forward to reverse (after I shift) then throtle up to move backward it will not move, RPM increase but the tractor will not move so something has to be slipping or something?

If the tractor is on flat ground its fine but a small and mean small or any kind of down pressure from the loader, scoping a load of dirt in the bucket causes the tractor not to move in reverse.

the exact description happened to my 7040 a few hrs out of the factory. if you are mechanically confident, remove the clam shell cover on the shuttle shifter on column. there are adjustments for forward & reverse travel (if hyd, not sure re: synchro shifter, but probably similar). the travel should be equalized in either direction....my guess is that it is not fully adjusted for reverse (too much forward)....i would get a helper to spot you as you make adjustments and try it....it is an easy fix with proper adj. a matter of equalizing travel for proper valve flow...... let us know

Excellent, thanks for the information. Did yours act like it was slipping after you tried to move? I ran it around the field in reverse on flat ground and it worked fine then continued to back up a hill and it started to slip again.

I'll pull the cover and see if these is trash under the cover that may have caused the adjustment to change. What tools do you remember using?

Thanks again!

it worked for a few hrs from the dealer, then acted exactly the same as yours....even when fixed, double check the travel adjustment in either direction, just as you would for old school valve adjustment lash on engine tappets.
