[QUOTE=Chuck52;. If McD can buy and ship ground beef from New Zealand (a country which seems to have a decent quality of living as compared to say China) cheaper that they can buy and transport US beef, how much is due to transportation costs? Does all their ground beef go to a central clearing house first, and is it relatively cheap to ship it to that point from New Zealand?

Chuck - thanks. I guess this is what I was driving at. I guess In-N-Out Burger can do it because they are within a three state area unlike McDonalds. Well this conversation means I need to take my monthly trip to Tucson and stop for lunch.

I make the following statement, not because I am a fan of McDonald's (I like Burger King) but because this is what I have read:

McDonalds gets most of it's beef from the USA but can not get enough from the USA to meet it's specs for lean beef and therefore is forced to buy the rest from New Zealand.

The lean beef in their specs is derived from grass fed cows like they have in New Zealand as compared to our corn-fed feedlot ones in the USA.

Most US burger chains use beef with a much higher fat content which they can easily obtain from US sources.

It is up to you whether you want to eat lean or fatty beef.

When grilling on charcoal I prefer to use high fat ground meat but when frying in a skillet I rather use very lean ground beef.

That puts a different spin on it, doesn't it? Life sure would be a lot simpler if we could just blame someone.....even simpler if we could all agree on whom to blame!

I put some effort into getting Made in the USA, but often they don't make the product I want. domestic fuel efficient vehicles have no were near enough room in the cabin for me. I'm hoping the new Mahindra Pickup will be roomy enough.

We buy anything we can made in the USA and pay more if required. We have only owned domestic vehicles, Ford, Chevy, and Buick, never had problems with any of them. The best made and widest selling truck is the F-150.

My husband works overseas for an American company, he can't make that kind of money here, we have a few more years to retirement and are salting away savings.

Our son was in the military for 10 years and works for the DOD as contract labor in Korea, they don't want to hire citizens it seems and let them earn retirement and such. He trains, American, Korean, and Japanese troops. He does have benefits.

My husband has worked in many countries and they are always wanting him to bring back things Made in the USA. He said the quality is far greater then what is imported into those countries. Our products are in demand and likely cost more overseas but there is demand.

Also people over there work hard to learn english, while some of our border jumpers here could care. Hubby is going to try and help get a party chief a job overseas if he can. Here in Texas companies won't hire a white or black guy in construction now because they don't speak spanish, what a sorry state of affairs.

If some of you anti union folks would read the history of unions you would understand why they were needed and why they still are. Without them you would have none of the benefits you do today. My old uncle worked in the mines before the unions. His retirement was living off welfare after a whole life of hard work. They were paid little, as any "worker" type was with no safety issues, no decent wage nothing.

Have you ever hear the term "hired off the bank"? Guys actuall sat on the bank where jobs were, road, mine, whatever and if a worker was injured or killed they had the opportunity to get his job.

I hope many of you have read about the labor movement. Other countrie do the same, remember Lech Wolenza in Poland? Even workers in China are starting to rebel for the poor pay that doesn't even provide enough for them to eat. Hope that all countries raise their pay levels, that might give you a chance to have a job.

We can never be on the same level of pay of those countries, if we are to keep jobs then we are a third world country too, better hope that doesn't happen.

I wish I wouldn't have "Wasted" my High School years taking German.

The Oakland Police Department was actively recruiting a few years back and the Job Qualifications listed preference for applicants with 2nd language conversational skills...

I checked the box since I speak German... went through the interview and when the language question came up I was asked what language... I said German and the interviewer told me he can't give me the bonus for second language because German doesn't count even though the job posting made no mention of language specifics???

Seems they only awarded bonus points for Spanish, Tagalog, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Laotian and Cambodian.

I thought to myself the Department must have trouble with people speaking these languages.

When I travel, people are always asking me to bring California Wine or Nuts... seems we still know how to make wine and nuts in California...

Patriotic Stabilist - I worked 25 years as a union officer for a union in a small city school department. Eight years after I left the Mayor decided to get rid of the union guys who were paying the AFL/CIO 48K a year for representation. They received no help from the national union. The sad part is that the AFL/CIO spends millions helping foreign workers in this country and in South American countries supporting socialist causes. The union bosses have done more to destroy unions than any politician. When the hispanics were protesting to protect illegal immigrants they had a lot of support from American Unions. The worker today has no one to blame but himself. By voting a liberal ticket they have signed their own death knell.
There is a place for unions, but I also remember a local bread company who told their workers that if they weren't reasonable then the bread company would have to close. The union bosses refused to budge and a couple of hundred union jobs were lost.

I too try and buy American, but after joining this site I have found the chances of finding an American made tractor with local dealer and support is almost "0".

Lacal - "By voting a liberal ticket they have signed their own death knell."

Please explain the link between a liberal vote and:

The mayor running the union out. I doubt the mayor was a liberal.

The unions helping illegal immigrants - you think conservatives and Chamber of Commerce types aren't happy to have a cheap labor pool? One way to deny the use of that pool is to give some bargaining power to those workers. That helps legal citizens too.

We wouldn't have the immigration problems if businesses adhered to the law and stopped hiring illegals.

I agree with your feelings about unions having a place but not always doing what they should, but please don't blame it on 'liberals'.

Dave1949 - the connection between the liberal vote and the ouster of the union is that the "international AFL/CIO" offered no help to the local union, but yet they are involved in the national/international socialist movement. The idea of "The Union" supporting illegal immigration hurts American workers. The Mayor was a democrat who has the support of the party. Go figure!

I think you are confusing conservatives with republicans relative to cheap labor. A true conservative is about country not politics and greed. I'm not big on republicans anymore than I am for democrats since everything they do is for themselves and never the American people. I voted Ron Paul!

I am all for immigration and for work programs for foreign labor, but illegal immigrants violate international law (the right to sovereignty of borders) and raise the security risk for this country. I would invite you to visit and follow the daily news here with the number of illegals arrested for crimes, the highway deaths, the hospital cost, and the amount of drugs that Arizona deals with weekly. Just last week an illegal was arrested who was found to have numerous arrest for rape and other sexual crimes. In addition, the border patrol rescued a women in the desert last week and several hours later they rescued her daughter. This woman didn't even tell the border patrol her daughter was out in the desert. The cost of these rescues and the medical care for these two people was in the thousands. We have a neighbor here who was fined 75K for yelling racial comments at a "dozen" illegals he had stopped and held while he called border patrol. They were afforded free legal assistance and sued this rancher for millions. they lost everything, but the 75K and of course the rancher had to pay for his legal fees. The illegals cross the ranches here and leave their trash and waste behind, leave grates open (a major problem here), steal and leave water running. One rancher even has a prayer rug he found on his property. This is a result of a liberal agenda.
