slydog,
I used an electric ban saw for cutting and the drilling was fine until I got up to the 7/8 holes, they were tough going on a small drill press with a cheap bit. Those old bed frames angles can be tough to drill through. My steel was free, got a friend that works for a steel company and he seems to always owe me a favor. The hitch really turned out better than the pics show. I will paint it today when it warms up. May post a final pic when its finished.

Slydog, those bed rails are hardened so that they won't bend as easily for their rather thin cross section. You'll also find they break fairly easy where they are welded. HTH, later, Nat

See a pic of mine on the soil ripper thread.

They bent the 1/4" bar stock that I bought at TSC after first cutting it a little bit, then backfilled with weld at the bends. You did yours in individual lengths and welded them together.

The materials (incl. a 3rd bar to attach to the soil ripper bar for lifting it and a 2nd top link to go between the top of the drawbar and this 3rd bar pair) was $75. JD wanted $290 for an adaptor, and I likely would not have gotten my drawbar that I can use for other stuff. I've already got my 1 1/2" ball for towing my Gravely cart mounted on it. Couldn't leave it mounted on my to/fro drawbar on the tractor for when I needed to pull my Troy Bilt shredder with a std pin hitch. On this new drawbar, I can, even with the soil ripper attached to it.

RalphVA,

Thats a good looking drawbar. You saved yourself alot of money. Did you do the welding yourself? I really enjoy making attachments and repairs at home. I am fortunate to have a good friend that works at a steel company. I am also very fortunate to have my woman helping me do the things I love.

I've not learned to weld. My friend who gave me the soil ripper did the work with help of a welder during slack time in the machine shop. He's the machinist (for 40 years).

Should get my Dad to teach me. Might be a way of passing the time during those dreary visits to Oklahoma.

Welding is a lot of fun. Its got a season, you want to weld when its cold so you can wrap up. I have gotten an unwanted sunburn/weldburn more than once welding in a t-shirt.
