haven't found a "magazine" ... but I'm real partial to a no-ads "newspaper" called Farm Show. It's a great bi-monthly that shows what others are building, hacking, inventing ... and it's great for getting ideas of what I could build if I just had some time ... ( http://www.farmshow.com )
I used to aubscribe to the Canadian monthly GrainNews ... but it ended up getting too political on the grain situation back there so I dropped it.

too bad that common sense ain't

Thomas, seems we got short end again. Still snowin' but only have less than an inch of snow on the ground about 25 F no winds. Where they come up with these forecast is beyond me. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Had freezing rain all thru the night. A good coating of ice on everthing though. Went to turn in the manual locking hubs on my wifes' little buggy(Bronco II) found they were froze over with ice and wouldn't move. /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif Glad my truck's got auto locking hubs /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

We get Country Journal at home. My wife likes it but I haven't looked at it much. Just paging through, it looks to me more like a "how to decorate your house 'country style'" magazine.

We just got a post card for a free issue of "Farm & Ranch Living". The card says:
"If you love the "good life" in rural America... If you'd like to meet folks who share your love of the land... if you'd enjoy a "tour" of America's farms and ranches... then send for a free issue of Fram & Ranch Living. You'll discover daily diaries written by real farm families... full-color photos of the most beautiful farms and ranches in America... fascinating agricultural facts..."Old Iron" news and more"

Well, it sounds like a magazine version of Tractorbynet. I'm going to order a copy & will post a review.

Anyone else interested, the address is:

Re: Magazines - Want One?

WVBill & Others,

I have seen most of the magazines mentioned here. They all have various good content on aspects of rural living, but, they are pretty light on the specific topic of compact tractors.

With a million small tractor owners out here, and a real explosion of "new" buyers for these types of tractors, a magazine "just for us" sounds like a good idea to me.

How many of you would be willing to subscribe to a compact tractor magazine? How often would you like to see one published (monthly, quarterly?). And, how much would you be willing to pay for such a subscription ($20, $30, $40)? What types of content/stories/photos would you like to see?

Re: Magazines - Want One?

BobT, I'd love a magazine that mirrored this site! Seriously, to meet sufficient demand it would have to be a bit broader. I'd like to see tractor projects, safety topics, gardening, property maintenance, barn building and upkeep, property security, recipes, photos, letters to the editor, tips from readers etc. My wife and I have considered doing a video series as we prep the land and build the barn and house (similar to Hometime), but doubtful we'll actually do it. As for cost, I pay anywhere from 12-75 dollars a year for various publications I enjoy.

Re: Magazines - Want One?

Rob,

Thanks for your remarks. That would be SOME magazine. I agree with all your article choices. The videos would be a good idea too, but the cost of video production is so high, that I am not sure it could be profitable. Maybe as a bootstrap guerrila video type project. I have done a few videos, and they are a lot of work, even when you do most all of the work yourself.

Re: Magazines - Want One?

BobT,

I'm basing my answer on the fact that I seem to always be willing to pay $50-60/year for Woodenboat magazine (published monthly), and I'm guessing that I'd get more info that I would ACTUALLY PUT TO USE from a compact-tractor magazine. (both would be pleasurable reading... but I'd probably file WB under "romance", and CT under "practical" :)

I would vote for a bi-monthly or quarterly publication. This would allow time for the submission/editing of sufficient material from which to choose "meaty" content, and a reasonable limit on the amount of "fluff" ( here's a picture of MY tractor, etc. ).
Don't get me wrong, ... I like a sprinkling of such "fluff" and "downhome" touches, too (the "Launchings" section in Woodenboat is an example. But I'll spend my money much more readily for a nice balance of technical, safety, applications/techniques, product news, etc., along with the sociable/neighbourly stuff.

I offer this cautionary thought ; It is very easy for an "enthusiast" (of any stripe) to imagine/convince-himself that surely everyone must find his "interest" equally exciting, only to come to realize that the relatively small group of afficianadoes with whom he is already-familiar actually constitute the bulk of those really interested. The fraternity of "human-powered vehicles"-enthusiasts and the sub-category of human-powered boats, both of which I have some background in, serve as examples.

Many have dreamed-of, and worked-hard-for the promotion/acceptance/commercial success of an idea, to fade-away, in the end , after discovering that the real "market" was nowhere near the imagined-in-the-grip-of-excitement one.

Still, with that being said, there ARE successes! And my own estimate is that the compact-tractor group (steadily growing, as you have noted, COULD support/reward such an effort. The participation and content-quality of Tractorbynet constantly amazes me! And it is very probable that the posters are just the tip of the "lurking"-iceberg.

One such "success", of a more "homegrown" flavor than the bigtime Woodenboat, is "Messing About in Boats" (I think I have the title right), which I recommend you have a look at, as an example of how a "special-interest" magazine, started "desktop"/on a small scale, can thrive and survive.

I think you have a good idea, and would pay, let's say, $35/yr. for a bi-monthly...and maybe $25/yr. for a quarterly. (my guess is that trying to publish monthly, at least in the beginning, might result in the inclusion of more "filler" than I personally would like... but I could easily be surprised about this - might be way-off).

Something that would be a BIG plus to me would be at least a "section" that was advertiser-independent, where "straight-talk" about the relative-merits of competing equipment/attatchments, etc. could be found. Unless I miss my guess, THAT ALONE is the biggest "draw" of Tractorbynet.
In todays world of hype and power-marketing, honest opinion given by knowledgeable "friends" you can trust is PRICELESS!
( I offer "Practical Sailor" as a model of this type, also worth your looking at ).

It will be interesting to see what others here think.... Good Luck!

Larry

Re: Magazines - Want One?

Rob,

Thanks, again, for your most thoughtful and comprehensive reply. Maybe we could start with a relatively inexpensive "newsletter" type publication and try it for a few issues to see how it goes. There is just SOOOOO much of the type of content and discussion here that seems like it is needful of wider readership---all those folks who maybe don't have super-computers (like Bird!). I am going to talk this over with Muhammad and a few people whom I know in the actual magazine business.

Thanks again Rob. Happy holidays.

Re: Magazines - Want One?

BobT, thanks, but the credit goes to Larry. My comments paled in comparison to his. And Larry, it's almost like you've already been down the magazine path before.

Re: Magazines - Want One?

Larry,I take it you are a boat fan. I also am an armchair boatbulder. I have built one, but I am planing more when I get some space.
As a reader of woodenboat mag myself, I have to agree. This I one of the best mags I read. I think a tractor mag would have to deal with small lawn and garden tractors also, to broaden the market. I would like to see tips, on working on, and using my tractor.
This is a picture of me and the boat I made.
