magnetic drain plug, Penzoil Hydra Trans

I just received a Kubota M6800 4wd and had a thought about adding a small magnet to the various drain plugs at the 50 hour change. My Ford Explorer has a magnetic plug for the differentail, and I'm amazed at the ghray goop that comes off of it.

I found a powerful, very tiny cylindrical "rare earth" magnet at Radio Shack. About 3/16" OD. I thought this would easily fit in a drilled hole in the plug and could be staked over with a center punch. Any thoughts?

Also, Wal Mart sells Penzoil Hydra Trans universal tractor fluid that that is suppost to meet the requirements for UDT. Cost is $30 per 5 gallons. Does anybody use this?

Can't comment on the Hydra-trans, but I've heard mixed results from the magnet gig. Problem is that it sits on the bottom of the reservois where stuff tends to settle anyway. Doubt seriously if it would catch anything that was "in transit".

If you can be sure that you're not going to lose the magent inside, it probably doesn't hurt though. And if it gives you some peace of mind, go for it.

The Kubota L4850 I recently changed the hydaulic oil on came with big magnets on the plug, much more substantial then your Ford explorer. They came out with a considerabe amount of very fine metal filings. The magnets do a wonderful job of pulling metal out of the oil,gtransit or not. Rat...

I've used Pennzoil in my MF165, but have used the last couple years in both Massey's... the 5 gallon pails from Walmart's sister company Sam's Club by Quaker State... about $16.xx or $17.xx for a 5 gallon pail. {has/meets Kubota UDT spec's on label}
