Magnetic Oil Drain Plug - Home Made

After re-torquing the head bolts & setting the valve clearance. I changed the Oil & Filter. After pulling the oil drain plug I thought this would be a good time to modify it to be a magnetic drain plug.

Larry - Nice job of fitting square peg into a round hole - been trying to figure that one out since high school! Excuse the smart alec remark - meant in good fun. Where did you find the magnet? Good idea - I'll try it. Thanks - Yugo

Thanks for the feedback. This is a simple mod that anyone can do, you don't have to have a lathe to make it. A drill or drill press will work. I used the lathe because it's eaiser to find the center of the plug to drill the hole.

The magnet was one I had laying around, it was from a door alarm magnetic switch that I had spairs of. The hole diameter is just a few thousandths smaller than the magnet so that it could be pressed (hammered) in.

Yea I was told in grade school that you can't put a square peg in a round hole or visa versa. I wanted to prove everone wrong. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The beauty of it is: Even if it falls out of the hole it will simply stick to the bottom of the pan and keep on attracting metal bits.

I like it. I have very powerfull magnets from work. I thought I would just two-part epoxy one on. Your soln is much slicker
