Mahindra 2615
We recently purchased 5 acres of flat land that we're going to build on over the next year and have spent a couple weeks learning about tractors. Over the weekend we came across a Mahindra 2615 Gear with BH, FEL, and a few other attachments that was for sale in the local area. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, the previous owner was not available and his wife had no experience with the tractor - and I've never owned one (never even driven one until yesterday)... So we're starting from scratch with the basic maintenance needs. I've ordered an operator's manual from Bill's Tractor but that won't arrive until next week. With that in mind, I want to get familiar with it over the next few days and do a field mower pass on the five acres but I don't want to be unintentionally neglecting something important that could cause permanent damage to the tractor. The fluids all look good but currently I'm a little confused about the oil dip stick that is found on the floorboard by your feet. Is that the oil for the engine? Or something else such as the driveline components? When checked, the dipstick reads just at/below the low indicator. What type of oil should I add to bring it up higher on the stick and does the fluid just get poured in through the dipstick hole? Also the FEL makes a very subtle moaning type sound when I pivot the bucket that would suggest it needs a bit of grease - or is that normal. Any thoughts from those of you experienced with these type of Mahindra's that will get me through the next week with minimal damage to the new toy would be much appreciated.

I'm also hoping to remove the backhoe this afternoon and get the mower attached. I've got a manual for the BH - so hopefully that's clear enough to not mess anything up too bad.

Mahindra 2615 gear - previous owner bought in new in July 2008
Currently has 165 hrs
Looks to be in very nice shape save for a bit of sun-fade on the paint
Aslo came with Rototiller and auger set up.

Thanks!

Lets start by I have never owned a Mahindra. But they are all pretty much alike. From what you are telling me, and the FEL squeak/moan, I am guessing the disabled previous owner was not able to do the routine maintenance that all tractors require. First thing is to grease the loader every 10 hours of usage. All tractors require this. I would change the engine oil and Filter just because you have no idea when it was last done. Depending on your weather, usually a 15W40 oil rated for diesel (compression) service. Rotella, Dello etc. The dipstick on the floorboards is for the transmission/fluid resivoir common sump. When was that fluid changed, and its filter changed? Manufactures differ somewhat on when to change the fluid, but many state 400 hours, and hydraulic and hydrostat filters usually at 200 hours except engine oil filter at 100 hours. Of course this tractor being gear will not have a hydrostatic filter, but will have a hydraulic filter. The transmission is full (maybe 10 gallons or more) of hydraulic fluid designed to be used with wet brakes, (consult your owners manual for specified fluids) and is also the common sump for the tractor hydraulics. You will need to grease the chassis at usually every 50 hours, don't forget the front and rear pivot point zerks on the front axle. There will be many other zerks on the chassis and under it you will need to hit every 50 hours. Also be sure to check all wheel bolts and loader mount bolts. The torques will be in your manual, but for now until you get the manual, just make sure none are loose. The front axle fluid could probably use changing, consult the manual. Clean/check air filter, change the fuel filter, grease battery contacts.

You have at least a day going over tractor and just doing these things. Basically just check the maintenance chart in the manual and do the things that need doing. You and your tractor will be much happier. Oh don't forget to check the fluid levels in the implements too. Good luck with your new purchase.

Also, no the hydraulic fluid will normally have a filler plug on the back of the tractor, look for a rubber plug, with possibly a shepards crook air vent. The engine dipstick will be up front on the side of the engine, and oil fill will either be on the valve cover, or often by the injector pump. Be sure to check hydraulic oil with all implements flat on the ground and on a level surface.

James - Thanks for the detailed notes. Very helpful. I will get to work over the next couple days getting those items addressed. Also the wife believes the previous owner should be home from the hospital and available for a phone chat either Friday or Saturday - so I'm hoping to get filled in on previous fluid changes, etc at that time. Thanks again for the help.

Recon42, I have a 2615 HST, but fluids are the same for the gear model. The dipstick on the floor is your hydraulic fluid level. Adjacent to it is the hole for filling. The engine oil dipstick is on the right side of the tractor and you'll notice the oil cap on top of the valve cover.

When you go to remove the backhoe, get on as level a spot as possible. Otherwise it will be more difficult to reattach.

Also, I added a piece of 3/8" angle iron to the top of my loader bucket. On top of that I had bucket hooks welded on. Without the angle iron the bucket top is too easily bent if you get rough with it.

If your rear tires haven't been filled, do yourself a favor and get it done. The increased traction and rear stability will reward you.

Great advice up above , my 5700 gear kubota tractor manual says to change the tranny fluid and filters at 50 hrs. which I did do . I would also flush out the radiator and put new fluid in it , usually a 50 50 mix of water and antifreeze . Have fun and take care .

Yep, I forgot about the coolant. Most will call for changing it every 2 years.

Great advice from everyone. Thank you. Just went out to investigate removing the BH and discovered a small Hydraulic leak on the FEL where one of the hoses (part # 21106506044) attaches to the connector near the bucket. Are these hoses a replace every X number of years type thing - or is this just a failure. Concrete floor where tractor was stored prior to purchase was dry - so this leak appeared only after using the FEL for an hour last night.

Also, when powered up it drips less than a one drop a second. Is there any danger in continuing to use FEL while replacement part is located?

Did you try tightening it? You will need 2 proper sized wrenches of course. Or is the leak the actual hose? If so it will need replacing.. I have not had to replace any, but yes they eventually wear out. or you catch them on something like a limb and it can be stressed.

It appears to be leaking where the hose enters the connector.
