2006 Mahindra 3510
I have a 2006 3510 4x4, it has 276 hours on it...The tractor will not shut off when I turn the key to the off position, it acts like its is wanting to but never does. I have to "pop" the clutch to shut down. Where do I need to start?? Thanks

:welcome:to the forum. I'd start at the fuel shut off solenoid if it has one.

Now I'm not familiar with this particular model but to me it sounds like the fuel shut off solenoid wants to work but isn't. Going on that assumption from what you have written then I would say the electrics are all ok. So what I would do is find the solenoid and take it apart if you can. I'm thinking that it's sticky for some reason or other. There might also me some junk under the seat that is preventing it form seating all the way so that the fuel is shut off. The solenoid will be the part on the injection pump that clicks when you turn the key off and on. It should be a nice solid clicking sound. Hope this helps.

I should also add that it might be just as simple to replace the solenoid rather than trying to take it apart and putting it back together. It also could be just as simple as removing the solenoid, cleaning up the plunger and putting it back together.

Thanks guys, will check that out this weekend...

Surely it's the same as my 4110, occasionally mine will not shut off completely with the solenoid alone, that's why they have a manual fuel kill down at the bottom of the dash that pulls the same linkage on the injector pump that the solenoid operates. Mine is a black plastic T handle that says "STOP" on it.

Yes sir, I forgot to mention about the little t-handle to shut if off. Thans

yep i have had the same problem with our 2810. I pulled the rubber boot back and sprayed some penetrating oil onto the plunger and worked it back and forth by turn the key on and off. I havent had any more problems so far.

If it fails to stop in the future..... idle the tractor at it's lowest idle... then block the air intake. That should stop it. :)

My 4110 did this yesterday. It also had starting issues, thought it was a battery terminal, but doesn't appear to be the issue. My gauges also weren't working with the tractor running. I'm thinking it may be an ignition switch issue.

i thought i had posted the same problem earlier on, but i don't see it here. we found the kill switch (i guess its the one you guys are talking about) solenoid was at fault. the battery kept going down. i found the solenoid was drawing voltage as long as it didn't disconnect. a little wd40 solved that.

My issue turned out to be some bare wires under the radiator. The bare wires shorted and blew a fuse. After fixing the wires the issue was resolved.

 This is madness.

DO NOT DO THIS.

A diesel engine will suck whatever you are trying to block the intake with. I once found a shirt-sleeve in an air-filter housing. Then I saw the guy wearing his one-sleeved shirt...

To stop a diesel engine you cut the fuel supply (only) somehow.

Question on the above post...

Why?

Other than ignition and fuel delivery both gas and diesel engines are both air pumps. While it's not advisable are you saying diesels are more dangerous?

Diesel engines have higher compression ratios + commonly include a turbo so in general pull in a lot more air. I recall a post a while back where someone tried to stop a run-away engine on a dozer with a large jacket and it just ate the thing whole.

Also sticking/blocking anything in a running engine is a pretty bad idea.

Yeah, I guess they're a lot bigger than lawn mower engines!

In a word - Yes. At least in attempting to stop one by blocking the air supply.
The diesel has higher compression and correspondingly higher 'suction'.
It has the ability to, literally, suck the sleeve off your arm. In extreme cases 'De-gloving' the skin off your hand is possible.
Check your tractor - If it's a diesel the method of stopping the engine will be either a mechanical linkage or electric solenoid which... Shuts off the fuel supply, not the air supply.
Stuffing a rag in the intake often fails as the engine will suck air through the cloth, as you may imagine, and keep running.
Diesels have externally vented crankcases also. Unlike a petrol engine where the crankcase vents into the intake manifold (PCV) the diesel vents to open air so that the diesel cannot 'run-away' on it's own crankcase vapours.

There are such things as "Diesel Engine Air Intake Shut-Off Valves" but they are substantially constructed mechanical devices and are fixed in position as an emergency last-resort which keep clothing and body parts out of the intake system. Diesel Engine Air Intake Shut-Off Valves

I don't want to labour this point. - Just be aware of it.

The incident I mentioned with the 'one-sleeved shirt guy' (above) was involving a single cylinder diesel ride-on lawnmower engine. An Italian-made Lombardini vertical crankshaft engine on a Westwood 36" rider in England, UK. - Just a lawnmower engine.
