Mahindra 7520 4WD Vs. Kubota

I am having a tough time deciding between a Mahindra 7520 4WD and a comparable Kubota M7040 4WD or M8540 4WD.

My local Mahindra dealer (60 miles away) will sell me the 7520 4WD for $24,000 (special state fair price).

My local Kubota dealer (1 mile away) will sell me the M7040 with hdyraulic shift for $25,200.

The Kubota seems to be more refined then the Mahindra but I will take a drop in weight, horsepower, etc..

The Kubota with the hydraulic shift has a wet clutch, wet brakes, and a hydraulic PTO.

If I go with the Mahindra, I lose the hydraulic shift, wet clutch, and hydaulic PTO but I gain a little horsepower, another year of warranty, and better financing.

I will be using this tractor to mow/brush hog approximately 45 acres of CRP and do occassional dirt work to repair ditches.

I will not be purchasing an FEL.

What would you do?

I'd go Kubota for the convenience of a local dealer for parts, service, etc. Nothing against Mahindra, they seem to be good solid tractors.

Although I think I would prefer the Mahindra to the Kubota, they are both very good manufacturers, with very good reputations.

But, having a dealer a mile away vs. 60 miles away counts for a whole lot.

Unless the Kubota dealer has a horrible reputation, and the Mahindra dealer has an incredible reputation, I'd go with the Kubota.

The rest of the differences, including price, are just not enough to get excited about.

First of all - how big of a mower or bushhog are you trying to pull (assume pto)? Why do you need these big tractors? How big of a box blade?

Answer the first question, but in case you have a valid answer,
the kubota is less 10% different in price, and a closer dealer.
But the kubota has more bells and whistles which means more trip to the dealer.

i would not buy either - i would buy a 6500 4wd mahindra
HERE IS WHY?

M7040 - nice machine but kubota advertises their tractors HP at 2600 rpm, mahindra advertises at 2100 to 2300 rpm
big difference
the M7040 is really a 60 hp tractor for comparison sake (equivacable to a mahindra 6000 4wd)
the ag or ind tire sizes on the 6500, 6520 and 7520 are the same, rear size same as the M7040, mahindra has bigger tires on the front.(traction).
the 6500 and M7040 have comparable hydraulics at 11 gpm. the 7520 is superior at 17gpm - which you do not need for the work you described.

you can get the 6500 4wd for about $21K without loader, maybe less

if your answer is 7 ft bushhog and 7ft boxblade- i have been told by a reliable source the 6000 will handle it comfortably.

please forward me a rebate, finder's fee after you buy the 6500 4wd mahindra!

meyerwc, I am very biased towards the 7520, but here goes. 7350 lbs vs 4608 lbs, more than a few lbs difference. 12 x 12 trans std on 7520, 8 x 8 trans std on M7040. What trans with the tractor that your looking at? Are you sure about the wet clutch, the hydraulic clutch and the PTO? Looking at Kubota's web site, it looks to me that those are options for the cab model.
I have nothing against Kubota and if they were heavy and my local dealer was a lot different, well things might be different. Anyway just some of my thoughts for what they're worth, and that's not much.

Hi Meyer. Either is a lot of investment for rough cutting 45 acres of CRP once a year and the occasional light dirt work with no FEL. Don't know how big a cutter you are planning. I pull a 7' with a Mahindra 6000 (50 pto hp) and before that with an old MF-165 gasser (48 pto). Could probably handle 9'. When we were in CRP I was cutting 35 acres in 2 days with a 2 hour round trip drive each day. Had quite a bit tedious mowing along fence rows and around trees, pond and a couple steep slopes. Maneuverability of the smaller 7' 3pt mower made up for the smaller swath in the open. Also the larger mowers run the investment up still more. Although I wouldn't mind having a 9-10' which my tractor would still be OK with.
Another thought: Are you sure you need 4WD? With this size tractor you shouldn't need it for mowing or for light dirt work with a rear mount blade. I've cut ditches to drain standing water with a 7' rear blade on a 2WD tractor. Just used differential lock and kept one wheel on solid ground. 4WD is a definite asset for FEL and tillage work.
All-in-all my choice for the work you described would be a 2WD Mahindra 6000 or 6500 with appropriately sized brush hog or the equivalent Kubota. What fits you is important as is dealer location and skills.

The hydraulic shuttle on those Kubota's and the dealer being so close is what would seal the deal for me.

I am going with the Kubota M7040 and a Woods 840P mower from my dealer down the road.

I got a fair packaged price on the two of them.

This is a big investment but I plan on keeping it for a long time. I have had my other two tractors for over 20 years. My dad showed them no mercy so they have seen better days but I will hang on to my big ol Ford 9600 with FEL to take care of the big stuff.

I may only have 45 acres of CRP but I have another 35 acres that I need to maintain. The new tractor and mower will make things a lot easier.

The only advantage Kubota has on Mahindra is they offer some wet clutches. I don't know that I would give up price advantage, hp, weight, tire size, and of course a nice color all for a wet clutch.
