Mahindra dies after turning it on its side

Greenish gray at the front wheel? Front dif and axle lube . Gear oil and water.

If the engine has been "started" and now failed, pulling injectors to purge fluid is stupid. Damage done. Sitting 5 days should have allowed any crank case oil to drain back to the sump, but you never know.

If no damage, then suspect fuel delivery.

We need to get clearer on our terms.

"When I try to restart, the engine tries to start but only makes one short attempt to fire up but stops abruplty and doesn't turn over."

Low battery?, bent and broken engine internals? Fuel delivery won't keep the engine from cranking..

One cylinder still hydro-locked? It's a gonner if this is the case. 18:1 compression does not like liquid oil added to the combustion chamber volume.

The white smoke turning to grey is a good sign. The abrupt stop and failure to turn over is a VERY BAD sign.....Unless it's the battery! ;-)

Thank you, I had another fella say the same in passing so I will see about getting that done.
And sometimes things can happen before you know it. I bet that was heck of a job he did by himself.

I'm going with take it into a mechanic. Sounds a lot like it hydrolocked to me with you're description of the smoke and sudden stop.

I am not a mechanic, but I have made my share of mistakes from which I have learned a little bit. Doesn't a rough running engine with white exhaust usually mean coolant in the combustion chamber?

Had this happen to me on a dirt bike in the mountains, Dropped the bike over the side and it got caught on a bush with the engine top pointing downhill. It took several hours to retrieve it.
Engine could not be turned over after the recovery.
What happened? Hot oil migrated past the ring while on the slope and cooled there. Because the oil had cooled it would not go past the rings to the crankcase. so it was hydro locked. Removed the spark plug and turned the engine over to pump out the oil.
The engine then turned over and eventually started.

In your situation, if it was a diesel, you might have to temporarily remove the injectors and crank it over.
It will smoke and run like crap for a while after.

Sorry if this is repeated as I didn't take time to read all the postings.

Not a dumb question. The Mahindra MCRD engines are direct injection, so removing the injector would have the same effect as removing the spark plug from a gasoline engine to clear the cylinders.

Mahindra MCRD engines from the 1626 series and lower including the Max and eMax series are all indirect injection.

Can be. Can also be fuel not burning. Can be a mix of those two. Could be oil build up in the case from leaking past the o-rings when it was on it's side.

Weclome to the gang, SmallRedTractor. Most people here are pretty helpful...and most of us honest enought to admit we don't have all the answers. There has even been a thread about the "dumbest things" we've ever done. Most were pretty honest and self-deprecating. Hope the matter comes out OK.

Once the OP got the tractor back upright, letting it sit for a while was a good idea.

And if the engine started and ran reasonably for any length of time, even three seconds, that means the engine is probably in good working order still. If the engine was Hydro locked or something else, it simply wouldn't start at all. And once the engine did start, having it become Hydro locked after it was running for three seconds doesn't make any sense.

Then the OP said that when they try to start it now, it tries to start fires once and then dies. To me that sounds like he has tried to start it many times and the same thing happens every time. The battery/starter is still working and turning the engine over trying to start it, but after catching once and firing once it dies each time he tries to start. If you were Hydro locked, you shouldn't even be able to turn over the engine at all.If you slightly bent a rod, there is a possibility that the engine can run using the other cylinders, but with a worse bend, you will get knocking or other catastrophic events (e.g. holes in the engine block).

So my vote goes to a fuel delivery problem. After there are fuel problems on diesel engines, until they get a good supply of fuel, they will sit there and crank. Sometimes restoring a fuel supply involves bleeding old fuel filters. Sometimes it involves the water catch tank being full of air. Sometimes the lines. Troubleshoot the fuel system until you get fuel spurting out of the line that goes to your injectors.

I'm curious to see how this one turns out.

I don't have a lot to offer other than it will be interesting to see the condition of the glow plugs once you pull them. I also agree that you probably need to purge your fuel line of air.

It was mentioned only once, but I have to say it again: Glad you weren't hurt, or mostly pride. A tractor can be fixed and at worst, replaced.

I'm of the group of folks that think this is probably a fuel issue. As 5030 mentioned, you could have slightly bent a connecting rod, but with fuel, you'll probably get it started. From there you'll need to see what the running condition is like.

I think this is a situation where you'll want some help from a diesel mechanic. Not sure of your mechanical ability.

I am with all who say fuel issues. Not sure how in depth your owners manual is but getting fuel to your injectors will be much the same as changing a fuel filter. Look for bleeding air from fuel lines in the servicing section. Or get a mechanic to come to you
IMO the engine is fine if it ran at all/still cranks over

It sounds like the fuel system got some air in there when the tractor was on it's side. The fuel pickup was probably out of the fuel in the tank. If it turned over an ran a bit it is not hydro locked.
That grey fluid mentioned sounds like you lost some weight fluid from your rear wheels.

Maybe, just maybe, the liquid that you see on the front rim is from your front axle leaking gear oil?

If not, I would completely go through the fuel system and purge the lines and bleed the fuel filter like all the others have mentioned.

Im glad you are ok,.

thanks for the support HTWT
Try opening both (if it has 2) oils fill plugs. It happened to me (but I turned it back up sooner, and it would just try, but not start, like the flywheel was stuck. I took off the oil fill plugs, and heard a hiss, and it started right up

I was about to type the same thing. Thanks for saving my fingers some work.

I don,t know much about your specific tractor, but before trying to turn it over again, remove the injectors, or spark plugs, cause it might be you have fuel or oil above the top of the pistons, and you cannot compress that, so your engine will not turn over. Hopefully you didn,t bend any rods already. Once you have removed all the injectors or plugs, try turning the engine over and see if it will spin.
Hydro lock

Ditto for me. I'd it was hydro locked, it would not have turned on revolution, let alone run a few seconds.
