The gear is the better choice for sure.. don't care what any claims say but you loose ground power with hydros.. try mowing with one in high 1st up a hill and try mowing with the HST in high range up a hill... youll see the difference

My brand new eMax22 gear kept slipping into neutral when shifting to 1 or 3rd. The external linkage slides into different forks for 2nd and reverse and 1st and 3rd. So it can effectively be in 2 gears at one time. It's possible to take a big long screwdriver and realign the fork to the neutral position. The dealer seems to have fixed it with newer designed shift linkage that is less impeded by the fender and aligns better with the alignment plate that restricts linkage motion. The design seems problematic to me. If your thinking about buying one of these take a look at the forks when shifting from reverse to 1st.

Its just the nature of the small handle gear shifts... your trying to go across the section from point A to point B when you need to over exaggerate the shift... so down to the middle then over then down into the gear... and always drag the side of the slots...

I have not had a lick of trouble shifting. Most of the time I am going 2nd <-> Reverse, but I have not noticed any problem with 1st or 3rd. I am very happy with the manual trans.

I have the eMax22 HST it meets my needs. I think you need to think about what you plan to do with it, me I don't want to shift.
