the book calls for Dexron 111 to be added to my Mahindra tractors power steering. Would it be ok to add universal tractor transmission fluid?

Probably not the same stuff. You can add Dex VI if you cannot find Dex III.

Dexron 3 is now DEX/MERC ATF-the red stuff.It's all you need and in reality UTF probably wouldn't hurt anything.
