If you do a search on "Barn Ads" you'll find some great stuff!

Good luck and let me know if you find what you're looking for.

The biggest reason for the Barn Ads dying out is laws classifying them as billboards and such. They are no longer permitted in many areas.

I read an article somewhere on the web about your question. Basicly Mail Pouch would pay the farmers in tobacco, magazines or maybe some money if they didn't want the previous two.

I saw an article a couple months ago (I did a search and can't find it now) about Mail Pouch Barns where a group wanted the tobacco warning labels put on the barns or else have them painted over. Of course, the logical people argued that it's not really advertising tobacco, rather just of piece of nostalgic Americana.

Here's a great link--

Good link !!! I really like the idea of Inns and restaurants built in historic buildings like barns. It brings people into them and preserves historic buildings that might otherwise cease to exist. One of the best restaurants I have ever dined at any place in the world is the White Barn in Kennebunkport Maine. In fact it would easily rate number 1 in the US for service of all the restaurants I have seen in the US. It's not cheap so hold onto your wallet but it is top notch for a special occasion if you ever get the chance.

I find it hard to believe that people have so little to do. If worrying about warning labels was all I had to worry about, I would be doing very well.

Here in Ohio we had our BI-CENTINAIL 200 yrs old state: and one of the things that aws done was painting a barn in all 88 counties with a big OHIO CENTINIAL LOGO all of them were different and very interesting, well local station public brodcasting did a show 1 hr long showcasing the guy doing it and all the barns too, along with it was a 10 min blob on the mail pouch barns, where ohio got the idea from was what they said. anyhow the mail pouch logos were orriginally only done by 2 or 3 guys!, done free of charge and included a full base coat on the barn SIDE where the logo was to be, and then a paint price for the other 3 walls if farmer paid for paint the labor was free (or susposed to be free!) anyhow the logos got to be so popular that others started doing it because they like the looks. and then other advertizers started painting all sorts of stuff, milk pop cars ect. this made the FAD sort of fade out as it just became a different bilbord of the 50's~70's and like someone else said the last remaming painter is about to pass away... they had a short interview with him on the show if i remember right he was somewhere in his 90's.

anyhow here is link to the book to buy, but for some reason I can't get the old page that showed all the barns /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.statehouseshop.com/browse.cfm/4,1203.htm
