I'm with Harv on this . I don't want my mail box to harm someone that hits it because of an accident .
Mines been "accidently" been Run over twice . No Harm to driver or the mail box .Can't be sure about their vehicles ,as theyve never contacted me about it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It's been base balled once . It's been done in by the plows (PEN DOT ) 3 times . I now keep a spare in the garage (post and all ). I don't bury it so deep it won't move if it's hit . Most times it's just a matter of resetting it to plumb . John

I've had my mailbox knocked down twice. Once from a school bus and the other from a chip truck. I called the school and they sent out a guy to put it back. Called the owner of the truck and he sent the driver out /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I set up a PO Box while we were building our house, and I never even bothered putting up a mailbox when we moved in. The post office is in walking distance from the house, and I don't have to worry about my mail getting stolen (credit card numbers, etc.), snowplows, or vandalizing teenagers. Besides, now that I'm selling things on Ebay, I don't have to give out where I live to tons of strangers...

After reading this post it reminds me of when I ran a bodyshop. A guy drives in and says he just hit something down the road. I go outside to look at the car and see a mailbox post sticking up through the rear floorboard. Upon further research and removing the mailbox post it actully came through the floor under the right rear corner of the driver seat. A couple of inches towards the center of the seat and he would not have made it a 1/2 mile to the shop.

Talk about luck /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.

We can't keep a mailbox more than 2 years without it getting smashed the one time we was able to save it but this last time they got it good. They actually went left of center to hit it on the other side.So the new mailbox had some mods done to it. Standard looking mailbox with 3/8 plate steel welded inside and bolted solid to 2x6's .They may dent the outside a little but they should get a pretty good shock thru the bat.

Thanks for all your thoughts. As much as I don't want to light up the countryside, I think I am going to go that route. I called our electric company and they will install a security light and the monthly charge will be anywhere from 8-12 bucks/mo. Frankly I am tired of being the butt of some kids joke. I hope the light will detract them. (Then again, maybe it will just help them see a bit better!) At any rate, the engineer is supposed to call within a week and meet with me.
