This is John Day and Doug. It's finally done and so are they....so to speak. Bet they will both "sleep like babies" tonite. We still have to haul the wagons to the barn for the next phase...putting the bales in the loft, but that is another story. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

A picture of the 4 wagons, the 5030 and the TC. I have my rounder on the back, John has the NH square bailer and the last wagon attached ready to go back to the farm. Total bales, around 600. Rounds 18.......We know they are glad it's done even though John wants to do it some more. I think next time, John will be on the wagon. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

John: Hope you enjoy the series. Hope your wife does too. Again, thank you for your help and your tractor. It made it a lot easier for me on this go-around.

Like I say: "If haying was easy, everyone would do it......it isn't".

As usual, questions and comments are appreciated. Especially by Mike (PA) and Richard (CowBoyDoc), oh, and John and Jan.

Amen, amen, amen. Hard work, hot work, and much of the time, unappreciated work...I know the horses have never said 'Thanks'. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Nice series of pictures. Now if we could only get the sounds, smells (the hay not the humans or tractors), itchiness and fatigue to come through in pictures. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Mak\'in Hay with John Day

Mike:

I start sweating, just looking at the series.

Our JD square bailer gave out last year. The knotter's were wore out and the needles got so sloppy that the only way it would tie was to allow the needles to actually hit the bill hooks and then it wouls mis-tie about every third bale.

Actually, I prefer the JD bailer over this one. JD uses an auger to feed the hay into the chamber which makes for a more consistent bale, especially when bailing wheat straw (I should have taken some pictures of that as it was done a few weeks ago). The NH uses a set of traversing fingers to feed the bale chamber, but I got this bailer for about nothing. The knotters are tight, the knives are new and a nice "5 gallon finish" this winter will make it look like a "million bucks" again.

The NH never mis-tied all day. In fact, I have run over 2 thousand bales (wheat and hay) and no mis-ties.

I tend to put my money in the rounders and the other ancillary equipment. I'd like to get a new square bailer....maybe next year.

Re: Mak\'in Hay with John Day

5030, I thought you rebushed that JD of yours? Curious cause I just bought a 336.

Looks good. We're crying for good weather here, the horse people are crying for hay! of course crying about the price too.

I have to put new bushings in the neighbours massey baler this afternoon if I get my welding done.

Daryl
Just looking the pictures make me sweat. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It always was in the upper 80's when we were doing hay.

Must have one of them better days to do hay. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It only got about 72 up north in Oakland county yesterday.

Re: Mak\'in Hay with John Day

Thanks for posting the photos. Looks like 2 fellas got to do most of the hard work. How much of that hay do those monster horses (you have) eat a year? We just got through shredding our coastal Bermuda fields down again. Hay is so cheap here, not hardly worth cutting/baling. I think you can get $20 for a big round bale. Sure glad we didn't pay to fertilize. We'll put down some pre-emergent come Jan or Feb. We had so much rain in June and decent amounts in July that the grass just keeps coming up.

Signing off,
Wishing I had a CAB tractor here in Texas...Kyle

Re: Mak\'in Hay with John Day

The knotters were real sloppy and I got the NH for a song and a little dance. The knotters are real tight and the needles are too.
