( Speaking of ULSD fuel, I wonder how agricultrial engines and tractor engines in general will act on the new fuel. The sulfur is a lubricant for the injection pump and injectors and the absence of it will probably have a detrimental effect on those components. I know for certain that Mr. Lucas and I will become good friends.

My understanding is bio-diesel, like the 2% blend now required in Minnesota, helps to lubricate again. Might be one solution?

I stand corrected. We don't deal at all with volvo. Freightliner, Western Star, Peterbuilt and Kenworth only.

I do know that the older model ISX engines were very troublesome and many were replaced under warranty.

Can't answer that. Maybe Sky Pup can. I do know that the present LSD tends to dry out the seals in mechanical pumps and then they start to weep fuel.

The only difference between ORD and LSD is the color. ORD is dyed red as an indicator of a non-taxable commodity (somewhat).

Hi First I want to say thanks to you and everbody else who responded with all the great info. I guess I'll start with setting the valves and proably get the injectors rebuilt. After that maybe I'll look into the engine timing although I guess thats probably best left to a professional.
I still plan to look into changing my exhaust as well. My tractor has the XL cab on it and I was thinking about rigging the exhuast to run up the front corner like alot of the newer cab tractors have.
A couple more questions have come to mind also. First, I'm wondering what engine oil is best ie: should I use a synthetic oil or stick with a good quality 15W-40 regular diesel oil? Also I've always been told that a diesel engine should run more or less full out or at least at higher RPM to be efficent. I guess what I'm asking is would it be okay run it with say a brush hog on it at half throttle or is that hard on it.

If you're talkingabout running a 540 mower with 1000 pto and adapter- that might be do-able, if hp and grass allows without lugging. I wouldn't run 540 mower less than 540 as you need blade tip speed to get good cut and there's the lugging. I like15w-40 and regular oil changes for dsl engines due to higher contaminents than gas eng. I guess if you have the $ for syn oil and same interval, it's up to you.

Hi Thanks MMM for the tip on running my mower at 1000 pto. My mower is heavy duty with free swinging blades and if I only use in that mode for grass cutting I'm thinking that should work okay.

How many hours are on the tractor? Like I said in an earlier post, just about all the noise is from the exhaust. I use a 10 foot twin blade Bush Hog behind my 685. I generally run the engine from about 1500 to 2000 RPMs depending on ground conditions. If the load lugs the engine down to 1100 RPMs, I drop down a gear. 2200 RPMs on the engine is when the PTO speed is at 540 RPM.

My tractor has about 4500 hrs on it. You could be right about the majority of what I'm hearing is exhaust noise. The muffler that was on when I got it was shot so I replaced it with a non Case after market one. Its only half the height of the other muffler but twice the diameter. I'm pretty sure the other one was the original. Any ideas on what size muffler I could use to quiet her down. Like I said earlier I'm thinking of running the exhuast up the side of the cab so a long narrow one would be ideal.
By the way I enjoyed the pics of your place. Your 685 looks to be in a lot better condition than mine. A dairy farmer owned mine before me and I think it it spent a lot of time covered in the other stuff cows produce besides milk.
