Making Hay

   / Making Hay #31
Since I was on here last a few years back. I put up a Clearspan Truss Arch building for hay and equipment, 100 feet long, 16.5 feet high and 42 feet wide with a big metal roll up door on the front.

Has a sand ( I had to level the site and put in a retaining wall) but I put the hay on 4x4 pallets, rounds stacked on end, 3 high. The building holds 150 rounds plus the tractors and the hay equipment. I usually have 100 or so left over for the nags to overwinter on.:D

We have a NH baler, bar rake, and haybine that we allow our friend to use now as we don't make hay anymore for ourselves. He currently makes about 1000 squares a year.

In the day we were making around 500 to 600 rounds a year for 3 small herds of cattle. When I was a young man I used to help my grandfather make around 2500 to 3000 squares for his 2 small herds.

I don't miss loading that bale wagon one bit.

I'd love to have nice indoor storage, I get the baler and mower inside but everything else lives outdoors. Priorities. More reliable tedder, bigger rake, and more automated bale handling system first.
