I don't know about the rest of you but I have had it in regards to the "rules and regulations". It would seem to me that the "rules and regulations" are set up to allow others to force you to pay them so you can work. Kind of like the mob, if you pay us money we will make sure no one causes you trouble...

I just built a new house and tore down my old one. At my closing I was reading what all the "fees" were about and they had a "transport" fee of $175.00. I asked what that was for and they said that was a "standard charge" applied to all the loan closings. OK but what is it for? Where are you "transporting" my paperwork that costs $175.00  What followed was a awakward period of silence. No one could justify this charge. Then you have the $600 dispersal fee (const. loan). Thats right folks you pay for the loan, then your forced to pay someone to write the checks for you. They say its required because "they" have to make sure all the lein waviers are signed. Oh I forgot to mention that you are the one required to collect and file all lein waviers. **** of a system they have going there.

sorry for the vent...

Agreed as far as the sentiment, but so long as "the law" is the law, it's best to abide by it until such a time as we can get it changed.

Don't have to like it, but DO have to submit to it.......

Several years ago I was doing quite a bit of construction work on the residence and property of the executive director of the local (large city) Better Business Bureau During one of our conversations as I was venting similar to most of the previous postings, she suggested that she would like to take out a full page ad suggesting that people hire an unlicensed unbonded contractor, then when the job was completed not pay the bill because they didn't have to, because the contractor was the lawbreaker.

I don't know if this would fly or not, but at the time it sounded good to me. It sure would make short work of the "scabs" :D

In one of my net searches I ran across a court ruling where a couple tried as described above and not pay the builder, they lost as it was ruled since they had knowledge of them not having a license then they were party to creating the situation.

Local regs. state that a license is required so I will adhere to that. My company insurance had to be adjusted slightly, but otherwise it has been a low cost venture.

Operating a business without filing federal income taxes on income generated is illegal in ALL states.

Operating a business without carrying workers comp insurance is illegal in MOST states.

In Florida the workers comp insurance is so confusing most people can't figure out who needs it. Mowing fields it is not required as is planting grass seed but if I grade a driveway I have to carry it or file for an exemption. If I plant seed for a contractor they want to see an exemption waiver but you can't get a waiver for a job that does not require workers comp. Try to explain this to a general building contractor. BTW I'm only an owner operator LLC with no employees. You also have to pay the state to get waivers.

ain't it great the crap the state makes you pay for? here to have a landscaping business you must pay the state $75 for a live plant license, other wise you cannot plant anything and the business license will be for lawn maint. instead of landscaping. I won't even get into the other license's needed for the different types of landscaping.

This thread is a good example of why you should never go to an Internet Forum for legal advice.

1. The reason for all of the confusion is that every state, county and city is different.
2. If you live in a non-commie state, then most of these licenses don't exist.
3. Often times, states have these onerous license procedures because people voted-away their freedoms. This frequently happens when some groups in an industry get together and decide that they can "own" then market if the government will help them with increased regulation. A generation later, nobody remembers that their own people asked for the pain and hassle.
4. Worker's comp also varies by state. In GA, for instance, you don't need it unless you have three or more regular employees. Of course, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't insure yourself and your stuff. A lawyer should help you with customer agreements regarding damage / injury due to accidents. You should consider liability insurance... everybody wants to win the litigation lottery these days.

With that said, though, the general message that the others gave you is sound advice. You may be able to pick up an extra few bucks here and there by helping a neighbor on a Saturday afternoon. If you want meaningful income, go ahead and get a business license, etc. You will find that operating above-board is a lot less stressful. You will have a little bit of IRS hassle because of doing the Self-Employed tax thing, but your taxes probably won't be much. Just keep track of your expenses, including depreciation of equipment, otherwise you will be giving Uncle Sam more than he deserves. If you don't like that hassle, then you should be supporting this: Americans For Fair Taxation: Americans for Fair Taxation

Regarding this comment:
some policeman/code enforcement officer stops me to check my paperwork.

Jesss... vee are heeaa to check ya paaa-pas. DUDE!! This is America! If you guys are dealing with this kind of junk in your area, then you need to be on the phone to your state representatives like right now! There are some licenses that are logical because they affect the public health. There are some that are just un-American.

I don't mean this as a threadjack, but I think it is applicable to this subject. I would consider it a personal favor if you guys would read this article: The Absurd Report Free Corn By Lowell E. Hedges

the stuff being discussed above really makes me sad. Talk about gradual encroachment on our freedoms.

the stuff being discussed above really makes me sad. Talk about gradual encroachment on our freedoms.

Charles, I could not possibly agree with you more......free enterprise and individual initiative to improve their station in life are steadily being destroyed by a bureacracy bent on gaining control of virtually all aspects of an individuals way of life. As part of this very disturbing trend towards removing our freedoms, the powers that be demand an absurd amount of permits, licsences, insurances, registrations, etc., etc. ad nauseum, all with associated fees to fund their criminally irresponsible spending practices. Don't get me wrong, the U.S. is still the greatest country on earth but I am not at all comfortable with the direction this country is heading and things need to start changing soon..... Rick

By the way, I also reside in The Peoples Republik of Mass. - but I'm outta' here as soon as I get the chance.....

Our government is getting to be like a GANG. Thomas Jefferson and my personal favorite founding father, John Adams are rolling over!

It truly might take another revolution, people.
