Man dies in tractor accident on his property

(Niskayuna, NY - AP) — A man is dead after being pinned beneath a utility tractor on his property in Niskayuna.

Sixty-five-year-old Jared LaGoy couldn't be located late Sunday when his wife returned after being away for the weekend. Members of the fire department LaGoy led as commissioner for 20 years found his body.

Fire Chief Joe Batiste says LaGoy appeared to be disposing of brush he cleared from his land when the tractor went into a ravine and rolled over. He suffered extensive head and chest trauma and could have been dead as long as two days.

LaGoy also was a retired schoolteacher in the town 12 miles northwest of Albany.

My wife insured this guy

Very sad day

Very sad. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It sounds like his wife was at least spared the grief of finding him under his tractor. I really worry about stuff like that when I am working by myself. Dying is bad enough without having your wife find you crushed underneath your tractor, wrapped around your PTO shaft, or cut wide open from your chainsaw.....

More reason to be extra diligent out there. If not for yourself, for your wife at least.

I will certainly be more careful. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Sorry to hear that. My biggest fear is being trapped where no one can hear me. It can happen to anyone too in a blink. I try to keep my cell phone with me for just that reason, assuming I was able to use it. Even a workshop can become deadly if a jack should slip.

Anyways, Glenville eh? I grew up in Rock City Falls back in the last century. My cousin lived in Glenville in a brand new house his dad bought for $16000 in 1957. I worked as a broadcast engineer at WRGB but left for sunny Nevada 40+ years ago. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The taxes on that house today are probably approaching the original sales price. O/K maybe a little less. School budget just passed today 8 or 9% increase again this year. Real estate prices up 27% in 2004 alone, I forget how much it went up in 2003. Town is now reassessing us based on the inflated sales prices. My wages went up 1.25%

It is a nice area (Glenville) but I would like to make my way out west some day. I was in florida for several years and it was nice but I think I might like the weather out your way better.

Yes!

The tractor was only 3 weeks old.

The guy had owned tractors his whole life.

My wife told me he was very attentive to detail and safety.

He was a School teacher and was a fire Chief for 20 years.

He fell down a 30 foot bank. His property is on the Mohawk river.

He had head and chest injurys and had been dead for up to 2 days before he was found.

I don't know if he had a seat belt on or not.

He was a long time customer at my wifes office. She said he was a great guy. He was so excited about the new tractor, and had been talking about getting it for the last year and a half.

I know this statement may be a little rough but one of the guys at work said "At least he died happy"

Good lesson for us all.

BriGuy,

Your last post should be required reading for all of us and every new tractor owner...

How many of those points could refer to each of us?

New tractor with ROPS...

...attentive to detail and safety.

History or responsible postions throughtout his life...

Experienced with equipment and excited about his new tractor...

May have died happy, but probably was not happy to die.../forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

May he rest in peace...

A tragic accident, may the family find peace and acceptance.

My only whatif's on this is that the gentleman was 65 years old and had a new unfamiliar tractor....It takes a bit of time to get comfortable with any new piece of machinery. I suspect his unfamiliarity with the machine was the root cause of this fatal accident.

From what I've read here I'd guess something a bit different. I'd guess that the boy was next door in his yard one minute, next thing you know he was coming to ask grandpa something ....or just following grandpa (unbeknownst to grandpa) ....Grandpa backs up, even doing a half turn the wrong direction, you would still not see the boy (ie: by the wrong direction I mean if grandpa looked over his left shoulder before backing, but the boy was more to the tractors rear right side ....he still would not have seen him.)

Very sad. I feel for the family.

Opps, I had just read the thread about the boy being backed over by the tractor and thought I was replying to that.

Being a new tractor and all, I'd guess you are right on with your guess.
