Sorry for derailing thread Singalo, but in reality, travel to Mars is very tantalizing. I'm always interested in what's going on space-wise, as a casual observer.

This story lead me to wonder, why have we not started to build real "Space Ships".

Building the ship is no problem. Getting it up into space and powering it is the problem.

Just add some spaceship engines to an old surplus submarine.

Actually "powering the ship into space" is the biggest issue...once you are in space travel is basically simple...propel your self (ship) in a direction and you travel in that direction for ever unless you hit something or something hits you...(2nd issue)
