Mantanence for an 8 yr old tractor w/ 70 hrs

It's an eight year old machine and I'm sure you paid a premium for low hours. Personally I would change all fluids and fluid filters. Check the air filter, paying attention to the sealing gaskets or surface on the filter also. Some times the element itself can be fine but the seals on the ends have cracked due to age. The other poster is correct, the additives in the oil, coolant and trans fluid might have broken down. Change it and get peace of mind. Sometimes the most abuse you can do to a tractor, car, mower, is let it sit in storage. Unless it was "mothballed" properly.

Thanks guys, I decided to do the entire service. $175 for all the fluids and filters needed. Pretty cheap considering they were Deere parts. Anyway I worked on it all day today and now it's ready for some mowing.

Again thanks for all your responses.

I just purchased a 2004 X595 with 70 hours on it. According to the seller, he used it for one season to cut the grass and there after gave the cutting out to a lawn service. He said he had the oil changed at 50 hrs and one more time a year later and that's it.

What service should I be doing? I spoke to my dealer and they suggested doing absolutely everything. Every filter and every fluid, so that would include the engine oil and filter, the trans oil and filter the coolant fluid and the front end gear oil. It's just hard to justify how a tractor with only 70 hrs could need so much work.

What do you guys think?

I faced the same question with the x595 I purchased last month. It had ~300 hrs, and was traded in on a larger unit by the original owner. I picked it up for a very reasonable amount and have set about establishing a maintenance baseline as well as addressing some of the cosmetic issues.

To date, I've replaced: both air filters, engine oil & filter, hydro oil & filter, fan belt, and front axle oil. I've also repaired the cracked hood, replaced all of the decals, added a battery tender, and replaced a few knobs & switches. The tractor is solid, looks like new underneath, and runs great. My assumption is that it spent quite a bit of time in the sun, and was rarely washed.

And finally, I sold the 62c deck and picked up a brand new 54c. The price I paid for the tractor allowed quite a bit of 'refreshing' without exceeding what a similar-hour, but aesthetically-perfect machine would have cost. :)

Just curious, why did you switch decks. I initially wanted to do the same, but after using it I changed my mind. For me it was a storage issue, but I managed.

I absolutely love the machine. A huge difference coming from a GX345. How do you like yours?

I probably paid a bit more then I should have, but it only has 70 hrs on it and a couple of minor scratches. It was also kept inside, so the finish is still like new. I am 45 minutes outside NYC and these machines are very hard to come by up here.

Anyway I wound up doing a complete service. I changed all filters and fluids. I also ordered the roller striping kit and mulching kit.

Carl,
The deck was simply larger than what I needed. It's also quite heavy, and I'd like to maintain the underside. With a few back surgeries already behind me, a lighter deck makes sense. :)

For reference, I purchased the tractor for $6k.
