What a sad story:
Father and son die in manure pond at the dairy where they lived

It's always sad to hear of deaths under such circumstances.

Those who have a septic tank system should really pay attention to all aspects of entry as per attached.

One employee at a Merced County dairy was overcome by gases in February 2001 while trying to unclog a pipe at the bottom of a 40-foot pit. His co-worker lost consciousness and died trying to save him.

This type of senario also was/is quite common in oilfield senarios.

Mornin Dave,
There is a huge manure pit just south of me in Pawlet,Vt. I believe the concrete sides are up a few feet around the perimeter, but will have to look closer the next time I go by.

A sad story for sure.

This is not an uncommon occurance on dairy farms. I have heard several of these types of stories. My brother actually fell in our pit one year on the dairy we use to have. He is an excellent swimmer and said he had a hard time getting back out. The pit we had contained a fair amount of water in it but he said he still struggled to get out.
You have to be careful around those pits.

I've heard you can compare a manure pit to quicksand.

Not only is it sticky like quicksand, but it puts off a lot of gas that can slowly suffacate you. Kind of a double wammy.
