We recently acquired some horses (3) and I would like to obtain a manure spreader for use with my JD4600. Any suggestions on manufacturers, pricing, etc.?

Thanks for the help!

I did the research last yr. I have 2 horses. I found Millcreek to be the best bang for the buck. I got the 37 plus (37 cu ft or 30 bushel.... 1 bushel=1.25 cu ft). I paid $2700.

The reason I went w/ Millcreek is b/c it has a poly floor (not galvanized or wood) It has a urethane lining...basicly, a spayed on bed liner (Rhino style). Great warranty. Easy to move. Barn has concrete floor so I can roll it around even when full.

size depends on how often you want to spread, how often you clean stalls.

We have (3) horses and a Millcreek Model 25 (25 bushel) ground drive compact spreader. The spreader cost $865 in 1995. It has the basic metal body and has held up well. I have replaced (2) control cables that broke or were worn. The Millcreek parts department was very helpful. I keep it inside a barn and do not let it set with manure in it.

Thanks for the responses - I'll look at the Millcreek units. Where are these usually sold? I live in MN - do they go through dealers or direct?

(I'll correspond with them either to find out)

Also - I noticed that not all units are driven from the PTO. Is the model 27 a PTO-driven unit?

Thanks!

Around here I have seen the Millcreek units at ag supply stores similar to TSC.

Hmm. I'll have to check the TSC catalog and store near my home... would be nice if they carried it!

Thanks!

I've got six right now and was up to eight at one point in the winter.

I plan on looking at getting an older New Idea or New Holland or the like - something around 130 bushell or so for my L3400 kubota.

Seems to me you can get an older one from $700 to $1500 in reasonably good shape at an action. I have also found the odd equipment dealer who refurbishes old ones and sells them for under $2000. Basically they replace tires, paint, replace worn wood floor, grease up chains and replace anything that is broken.

The old ones seem to last a very long time.

Millcreek can tell you where your nearest dealers are. When I bought, my nearest dealer was about 70 miles away. The Model 27 is ground-driven.

I am looking at spreaders now. The best price I got on the Millcreek in current dollars was $2300 - take out the deluxe upgrade (bedliner, endgate) and you are still around $2000.

The Wallensteins (Canadian) are well built. I am currently leaning towards the Pequea (US - Pennsylvania Amish, I think). The tongue on the Pequea 25 bushel is really low to the ground so I would need th 50 but one of the tractor dealers has them on sale.

Also, 1 dealer has Pequea 50 bushel PTO unit for $2300. I have been thinking it would be more convenient to load the spreader with the loader so it would be attached to the ATV rather than the tractor. Is this reasonabe or should I plan on using the tractor to pull it. If so, the PTO unit is the best deal.

Anyone have opinions on them? Thanks for any input.

I went Millcreek Deluxe b/c I had spent a year looking at spreaders both on dealer lots and in use.

The non poly coated units had all started to rust. Infact if you go to a dealer and look at new on lot, you might see rusting. I had talked to several small farm/horse acreage etc and some of those with galvanized units had some rusting on floor, underside etc.

I spent my $$ upfront rather than taking it in the rear.

---just an opinion

Yeah, I will definitely spray bedliner in whatever I buy (it is pretty easy with a Schutz gun). All the units I looked at new had poly floors like the Millcreek. You are correct about the rusting. Even in CO the PTO Pequea I mentioned had rust on the scratches (it has been on the lot a while- hence the good price)

Has or does anyone have/own one of the Smart Spreaders, Would like to know how good it works. A bit expensive but very simple in design.

We have two horses. The spreader I use is Newer Spreader. It's light weight, easy to use, and rust free. Here is the web site:
Newer Spreader - Details and information

We were interested in those but when I posted on the HorseByNet site, I did not get any responses that had actual knowledge of the spreader.

How well does it break up the manure?

Is it an even distribution?

Do you harrow afterwards?

Have you had any problems with it (jambs, breakage)?

Thanks.

How well does it break up the manure?
It uses something like a spinning drum driven by the wheels which push the manure through series of openings to break up the chunks.
Is it an even distribution?
Yes, the drum spans the entire width of the spreader and the distribution is very even. We spread them on the pastures, meadows, and on the forest road in our woods.
Do you harrow afterwards?
I don't. However, I do use a flexible tine harrow to condition my pastures.
Have you had any problems with it (jambs, breakage)?
It's sturdy all aluminum construction and I hose it off after usage and keep it in the barn when not in use. No problem at all.
Hope this helps.

I have three horses on a small property. We use a ground-driven Frontier (John Deere) MS1105G manure spreader. Its the largest ground-driven one that was available.

When spreading I usually wish it was bigger (allowing fewer trips), but when storing it for the winter I usually wish it was smaller. I think that means we sized it about right.

The floor is poly-coated. The walls are galvanized. The rest of it is painted. Its been stored about 50/50 in barn & outside for about two years now and so far no signs of rust. I grease it up before using and apply oil to the chains.

It has some pretty aggressive teeth on the beaters and shreds the manure pretty well. So far it has served us very well. Can't complain.

Thanks, Ken. I have looked at the Frontier units listed in the brochure and would prefer to overbuy vs. underbuy. Can you share some thoughts on cost? :)o )

Thanks!

Mine cost me just under $2800, if that helps. There is an MS1108G that is 48" across interior, rather than the 36" across that mine has. It's rated capacity is 80 bushels vs. my 50 bushels.

This morning I posted a bit more info on how I use it over at the JD buying forum.

Who makes that unit for JD? Kind of looks like an H&S. Good price for an 80 bushel unit. MachineFinder had it everywhere from $3000 to 4000!

I still think the Wallenstein is built best but you won't come close to that price on one, particularly with the exchange rate.

IMO, those Millcreek ground driven spreaders are toys. How do those beaters work when the temperature is about 0 degrees F and your load has been in for a day or two.

Your tractor is large enough for something bigger. Find a nice, older pto driven spreader. I'm not sure what part of MN you are in, but here in WI you could find something that is a true implement and still has a lot of service.
