I also have a 50's New Idea spreader and it still works great after all these years.  I only have 3 horses and a goat.  What I do is put the manure, etc that I clean out of the stalls daily into a big compost bin.  When there is enough to spread (provided the weather is cooperating) I load it into the spreader and then take it out.  Some of what I compost I use for gardening so there is almost always some good compost.  Sometimes other people want it too.  Lately the weather has been very uncooperative with a lot of rain.  All the ground is mush.  If I were to try to spread I would bury the tractor.  So having somewhere convenient to put it until it can be spread is helpful.
