If grown in a 'farm' environment I wonder what the yield per acre is? How many acres to get 105 tons of product?

The USDA in 1915 estimated "...400 to 500 pounds of dried buds per acre...". At todays prices 400 pounds would be worth something like $390,000.00 to $450,000.00. Of course if anyone could legally grow it the prices would be much lower.

i expect that if it were legal the seed companies (monsanto) would develop a plant that would be easily harvested by machine. i'm thinking smaller sized plants with more density per acre. roundup ready of course.

Hemp harvesting machines are in use.

It is a very useful plant.:D

Hemp is super hard to harvest. Wraps up around all the machinery. Years ago they figured it out, but after the legalization most of that knowledge was lost.I remember reading that a canadian Hemp oil company was trying to adapt/upgrade a old harvester hemp to work with hemp as modern ones wernt strong enough or became tangled up too easily. I tried to find the article but failed.

that said, Im not sure if a mechanical harvester could cut marijuana for legalized smoking purposes as the buds would get pretty damaged in the separation process. Interesting idea though, but i think any weed will be hand harvested for the foreseeable future.

As I understand it, just a regular cutter bar and a round baler should work for harvesting hemp for commercial fiber. Too bad the knee-jerk government folks won't let farmers raise it since it's a good commerical crop, grows even on poor farmland, and should be competitive even against cheap foreign production.

As for the drug trade, marijuana almost has to be hand picked as the buds and new leaves are the ones with the most THC in them. Sure, you can use the whole plant, but then it's only about as effective as smoking a string of baling twine.

And we have an expert!!

Recent headlines such as "Mexican Authorities Seize 105 Tons of Marijuana" and CA trying legalize marijuana have me thinking. Are there such implements or machines made to harvest the "cash" crop? If it became legal even in just some states, Would JD and others start making balers?

By the way, I have zero personal interest in such. Just random wanderings.

Ok, you now have BATFE following this thread and forum, im sure they kew words popped up on their computers and they have an agent on here.

Yea but after you feed your goats that they would realy eat everything in sight.:laughing: I came across a 30 acer field around the Houston area while installing fiber optics a few years back. (my guys actuly found it) when i got there i told them to hurry up and get the cable up and get out of there. Just as we finished 5 cop cars pulled up and asked what we were doing there and told us that "we didnt see anything and should leave and not come back". They escorted us straight to the gate and watched us leave. Guess we found their stass lol:laughing::laughing:

No they were wainting on there "guy" to come back and did not want you to blow it!

As was said, Hemp has many legitimate uses.
As far as for smoking, it should be hand picked(entire plant) and hung upside down in a plastic bag for several days. then pull the leaves and such to dry for smoking.(hanging upside down supposedly allows the THC to flow from the roots into the leaves, and the plastic bag keeps the plant moist enough for this to happen)
But I'm just going by what I've heard:)

Just look at the balers for sale from time to time on the Crown Assets Website of the Canadian Government. Judging by seized-property sales, it's obvious drug harvesters use regular hay-processing equipment, though not for very long at a time, as most balers I have seen are almost new. Maybe if JD came out with a B.C.-rain-forest-camo model, the things wouldn't turn up in auctions as often <grin>.
