Hello.

Anyone help with small problem?

I have a Kioti DK50 and was using it with a topper that I have had for a number of years when the sheer bolt snapped -unreasonable rock involved-checked and tightened blades under topper and replaced sheer bolt -got 100yds before it snapped again and again. The tractor is 50hp; the topper is 5foot with a single arm underneath carrying two rotating blades -each of which can swivel freely. With my previous tractor -20hp this little topper worked on the same ground with no difficulty.

Many thanks in advance.

Mark:

Welcome to TBN :D! I assume your "topper" is a rotary cutter. There is a lot of PTO HP turning that driveline than with your 20 HP tractor. I keep thinking there is too much power and/or your shear pins are too soft with the DK50. Are the blades seriously chipped or the single arm blade carriage bent- throwing everything seriously out of balance? Jay

thanks for welcome and the prompt reply. Yes, it is a rotary cutter. Blades and bar are in good condition. Blades replaced last year. Arm is straight so maybe just down to the strength of the sheer pins I got as replacement but the pto shaft is now also extended by about 4inches as its a bigger tractor. Would that matter?

Mark:

I am no engineer, but I do not think that it should matter since the sliding (male/female) drive lines are still engaged. I would try a stronger shear bolt in a nonobstructed area filled with "unreasonable" rocks and give it a spin. Jay

PS: I like your term "unreasonable" :D. I have met a few in my life . Jay :)

Grade 5 bolt perhaps?

No slip clutch? If not, what RPM are you engaging the PTO at--with the extra HP you may be snapping the bolt when you engage and it may not fall out for 100 yards??

Thanks for those contributions. I shall get grade 5 bolt for starters! As for revs when engaging pto, my tractor has 540 only and I would usually engage pto in middle gearbox in first at low revs. Will report back when bolt fitted. Litttle trip required.

Wow, I was just kidding you. You have a perfectly nice accent and welcome to the TBN forum. There are some very helpful folks around here and I have certianly learned a lot. Stick around, enjoy yourself, and don't hesitate to jump into a conversation.

I may be wrong on this but when I read the post it sounds like your brining up the speed on you tractor before you engage the cutter. If thats the case then you might be snapping the bolt as said earlier. According to my manual I need to engage at idle and then bring my speed up somewhat gradual or I'll snap bolts right and left (which I've done numberous times).

Good luck.

Mark I'm not an expert on the subjact but I was wondering if you could be moveing faster and with the extra HP not noticeing the mower loading up like with the 20 HP tractor therfor the shere pins are doing what they are suppose to do.

Thanks CFHartman!

Whatever the reason, the problem is solved. Getting the stronger bolt was effective. No problems over 5 acres of topping later! Horses eat selectively causing me grief keeping my paddocks nice and tidy. With diesel as expensive as it is now - approx €4.60 a gallon (ag. diesel)- I would prefer if they ate it all down evenly! Might be time for a few sheep! Incidentally, for those who might be interested, I think the Kioti DK 50C is a great little tractor. I was going to buy a Ford 4610 4WD (1993)that had been really well looked after but it was a bit big for my yard and had only approx the same level of power but the Kioti does everything very smoothly and has lots of power.

I agree with B8Fish, a friend of mine had about the same problem last week, seems like he had this problem several times. His son installed a slip clutch (dont ask me how, I havent seen it) I would be afraid to install a really strong bolt, because something has to give when you hit something and if the bolt doesnt shear the PTO shaft (or gears) could shear. I have a rotary tiller for my JD and I was told to use the same grade shear or something would get damaged
Just my 2 cents worth
