Market farming without 3 pt hitch tiller

I say get the tiller... It has saved me more time than any tool I have... You could till 10 or 12 gardens for people and pay for the tiller... I made enough money in two years to pay for my tiller and tractor... Some people will pay good money to have a garden tilled or plowed...

Wow! What do you charge for a garden? I till about 4 gardens a year and the most I get is a 24 pack of beer. I'm not a good with business dealings.

"And yes, it is hot as h*ll the past few days.
What part of Alabama are you in? My place is just between Greenville and Fort Deposit."

You ain't kidding about that! I live just above Montgomery at Lake Martin and it has been bumping between 95-100 every day here. Way too hot for this early in summer. I go out to do anything and I am literally soaked with sweat after working an hour in the shade.

Thanks guys. I remember this has always been a very helpful group. I'm finishing this summer with about an acre then next year want to bump up to 2. I'll just figure it out after that. Since I have what I need I think I'll stick with that for now. gwstang I have a place on Sandy.

I will have a ton of questions for you guys. I just turned a new .5 acre. I've never done that in June, but I figure it' better late than never.

Thanks again.
John

Although this was back in the 1950 and 60's, my grandfather had a successful market garden with an Allis Chalmers G with a plow, cultivators, and a raised bed maker/ potato hiller, along with a 2 wheel Gravely. He supplemented his income nicely with his 2.5 acre set up.

I would love to have an old farmall.

Yep. The one that I like is around 1949 or 1950 with the offset. The belly hydraulics are pretty cool too. I bet they're pretty expensive. That's a great picture.

Only thing offset is the steering wheel I think. In Michigan any tractor this size goes for about $1,000 - 2,000. I got this one for $900. But it needs tires and rims on back.
The belly hydraulics don't work. I got another system that I need to put on

The ground will work much better with that type of tillage. A buddy of mine is in the Farm Market as a sideline. He tills the dirt too fine to my notion, so as to use his Jung seeder. It's practically like flour... After a rain, it gets so hard, the new shovels on his mounted cultivators on the CA Allis, just skim the surface.

He has since gone to using a hiller, and plastic mulch, and drip tape. After tilling that fine, the dirt seems to mellow a lot quicker under the plastic.

My neighbor plants a 1/2 acre veggie garden each year (he's 91 years old, been doing this for 80 years). He discs using has JD 2640 and an 8'ft wheel disk. Overkill for a 1/2 acre garden, but that's what he has available. He takes his twin axle dump trailer to the worm farm and gets two loads of casings. Then he rototills the casings into the soil with his Allis Chalmers diesel garden tractor. He likes to work the soil to a fine condition and the casings prevent compaction and provide the needed drainage. He uses driplines under plastic sheet for irrigation and weed control.
