we live on a glacial moraine - and have a lot of limestone close to the surface, so a lot of folks around here make rock cairns to mark corners, driveways, etc... out of limestone and red sioux quartzite boulders.

I kind of liked it the way they did it in Dances with Wolves and a lot of tea. But then i suppose you are looking for a tasteful visual reminder.

this time of year that would be very visual, and depending on the tea, tasteful - at least from one side of the equation...
durability becomes an issue, however - as does competing with the neighbor over who can make a higher mark on the closest tree.
Hotwires also make this a very dangerous process!

Had a corgi once that would flip his back end all the way over just so he could reach higher, kind of like some sort of gummi dog. He could hit a lot higher than some of the labs and always had their respect.

I suppose the 'visual' component would come when the grass, weeds whatever either grew a lot greener or turn a lot browner.

Would not know about hotwires, i was just smarts enough to figure out if that sucker hurts my hand or whatever, sure as heck do not want to put anything more sensitive close to it and complete the circuit.

How about marking it with a deer stand? You would have 2 shooting lanes at least.

had a dog who tried marking the hot wire post once.
once.
he just stood there and shivered for a few minutes afterwards...

he he.... remindes me of the neighbor girl when I was a kid. Our dog was a fence climber so the electric wire went on top. She climbed the fence and decided to bite it.... he he :D :D

...and the pastor's wife who always wore a dress, was weeding the garden by the chicken pen, backed up into the wire and promptly sat down on it.... :eek:

Not sure which was funnier. :D

I like the treated post and bird house... but my wife like natural trees... so we put in more trees... over time they will screen and make a nice fence row.
~~~~~~~~~I don't like post or stakes cause you have to mow and trim around them.
Trees are even worse.
Back on 1974 I planted 6 pine trees along my rear lot line.
Today they are 30 to 35 feet tall and are allays dropping branches needles and pine cones in mine and 3 of my neighbors yards.
It's a hassle to keep the yard picked up and mowed around them.
Also there is a pretty good slope in mowing around them and worse yet there are large surface roots which makes mowing there difficult.
If I had it to do over again I would never have planted them.
To get rid of them and level the yard back like it was before I planted them is talking big bucks and much labor.
Give me something that is at ground level that you can just drive the mower over any day
yup, just pave the whole yard. Makes it lots easier to mow. : )
I have a 4" post hole auger that I dig below frost line with (30" here). Then fill the hole with concrete to ground level, insert some rebar or other metal into the top (flush) so it can be found with a metal detector if covered. ~~ Lowell D.
