Marlin 30/30 Model 336

Is there any difference except price, in a model 336 from Walmart as opposed to a gun shop? Walmart price $347, gun shop price anywhere from $399-$489.

For that price you could get a really nice used Savage 99 in .300 Savage or .308 Winchester.

The Marlin is a really nice rifle(have one in .357Mag). But, the 300 Savage and 308Win will totally outperform 30/30.

I owned the nicest model(checkering, gold trigger, and very nice wood) at one time. It was a very nice gun and shot a decent group. A friend of my ex FIL wanted it and offered more than I had in it and I was really wanting a 30-06 so I sold it to him and let him hunt on the ranch here with the ex FIL and I. The bonehead nearly shot me the next morning as I was leaving my stand  with that gun. Fortunately he missed:), I have since become VERY picky about who I hunt with.;) And yes, I was wearing the required orange vest and cap. All he would say while I was having a screaming fit, was something about it looking brown in the fog.
The old 30-30 is an ok round for what it is and has brought in a lot of deer over the years. I actually like shooting it in my contender pistol more than in my winchester rifle. My favorite(currently) deer gun is a Remington 788 in308.

If you have a problem with the rifle after the sale who is going to service it,the gober at wal-mart that does not have a clue about guns or the experienced gunshop owner? No brainer here(GUNSHOP)coobie.

Problems after the sale are generally referred to the manufacturer as a warranty item. If warranty is expired, any gunshop/smith will work on it anyhow so it doesn't matter.

Besides, Walmart will take it back and exchange it within a reasonable time after the sale. Gunshops....good luck with that one. I say Walmart if they have what you're looking for.

You don't really service a gun,you clean it,and if it breaks[vary rare thing in my opinion],you either, send it back to manufactor for repairs,or you take it to any gun repair type person[who might want to,or in most cases, able to,work on it].

A gun shop, for example, will put a scope on for you and bore sight it for you, even if you didn't buy gun from them, bet most will do it even if you didn't buy the scope from them, money is money.

Gunsmith, thats the word I was searching for!

Thing about a good gun shop over walmart,is hopefully they can answer your questions if you need questions answered that is,I never needed to ask them what to buy, already knew that, but some do need info,so for somebody who doesn't know what they want,or doesn't know the difference between a 30-30 and a 30-06,than yeah gunshop would be better than walmart.

Agreed...however... If you don't know what you want, or how to operate what you do want, or have any questions other than "how much?", go to a funshop and browse, ask questions etc. That part is free. Then go to your local Wallyworld and see if they have it. If they do, 9 times out of 10, they'll be cheaper, if not, head back to the funshop.

You guys are scaring me!:eek:
If you don't know enough about guns to operate one safely or the difference between a 30-30 and a 30/06, please take a gun safety course!

A "gun safety course" won't teach the operation/breakdown of every type of action/caliber on the market. Gimme a break.

And for the record, a lot of people who are not well versed in firearms, but have general knowledge of, let's say pistols, may not know a lot about a 30-30 or .30-06 caliber rifle, but do know how to "safely" use a rifle and have done so safely and effectively in the past.

Thanks for all the replys. I'm still not sure which one I'll buy. The determining factor may be whoever gets one in stock first. I've been looking for a month now and no one has one.

Check your area pawn shops for a used one under $300?
Otherwise, go to the gun shop and try to negotiate the sale - see what kind of deal they'll give you if you buy the rifle, hard case, sling, and a few boxes of ammo from them all at once.
Cash vs credit may save you a few bucks there as well.
Other thing to try is to find a gun shop that DOESN'T have a 336 on the wall and see what kind of deal they'll give you to order one in. Many will charge around $25 over cost and shipping just to have a sale.
