The JM mark on the barrel (on the left side just forward of the receiver) indicates that the gun was made in the "old" Marlin plant - pre Remington.
Lately these JM marked guns are highly sought after and command a premium price (as much as 1/3 higher than a few years ago).....as the Marlington's are not up to the old standards. Hopefully Remington will figure out how to build 'em pretty soon.
