I’ve seen pictures of valves hitting pistons after a timing chain failure. What ever happened to the top of that one wasn’t that severe. What do the valves look like?

It certainly was not a severe impact with the piston. The valves look fine from what I could tell, but I dropped the head at the machine shop and did not take the valves/springs apart.

I was fine with the theory that the engine overheated and the valves stuck a bit - maybe oil pressure was down due to the wear on the oil pump so the valves were not getting as much oil as they should.
