Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was referring to whether or not Continental had produced more than one 4 cyl gas engine for the 165. My 135 is a Z134 4 cyl gas Continental engine and the 150 I believe is the Z145, and as you say the 176G number represents the 165s.

All photos I've seen for the rebuild kits for your tractor have a recessed piton vice a domed piston. Only thing I can think of is that when the kit was put together someone got their numbers crossed, doesn't help you I know at this stage of the game....

Forsure...I also tried to dig up another Cont. and couldn't so somewhere in this company's info they have the wrong set up for that motor.

I never knew there was a 150 Massey....then again I never knew there was an 85 gas until I bought one.. :p

135's came with Continental Z134's AND Z145's (135 deluxe had the 145) 150's came only with the Z145, or Perkins 153cu in 3-cylinder gas OR diesels.

I'm not going to re-type that "Great American Novel" I just posted over on MTF, but as was discussed, you SHOULD have the correct pistons there. Valves are NOT open when piston is @ TDC.......

They are on the exhaust stroke.

FARMWITHJUNK, looks like you're right, the 135 specials did have a Z145.

Have you rebuilt any of the motors in your MF 50s and if so, were the pistons domed?

They are on the exhaust stroke.

They (exhaust valves) are open as the piston comes up on the exhaust stroke, but the valves are closed just as the piston reaches TDC. Otherwise, they would allow back flow (reversion) as the piston starts back down.

I've rebuilt a few Ferguson F40's and Massey Ferguson 50's. MOST have the standard "low altitude" engine with flat top pistons. They were offered with what is described as a "high altitude engine". It had higher compression ratios as a result of domed pistons. I've ran across only ONE MF50 and ONE TO35 with that engine option.

Well I spoke to the supplier today and he gave me the go ahead...but not after he second guessed and called the manufacturer...and also checked and no other listings for that tractor so not like there is another option.

I guess Sunday I will get started...and I'm sure I'll be saying the Lord's name throughout the ordeal

Good luck, sounds like you've covered your bases, take some pics if you can, I'm not that far off from rebuilding mine and would like to hear how your project turns out.

No, both valves will be slightly off the seat @ tdc. That is basic theory for virtually any four stroke motor. Even the mildest cams will have some degree of overlap.

He was right in mocking up the assembly to check for clearance. It is not the correct part.
