As of this posting the 253 is starting normally. I'm post this as a guide for anyone with this model so that it may save some time for them. I was bush hogging thurs. and stopped to take a break. When I went back to start to finish no start. I checked the usual suspects, battery, grounds, starter, ignition switch and all was good. Got out the manual to begin looking for wiring diagrams and found there are safety switches for the PTO and high- low trans gears. After 6 hrs over two days I traced a short to the PTO switch and when repaired and wiring harnesses taped back together everything is good again. I was happy to find that I could find and repair at no expense other than time. I'm not a mechanic but am pretty handy with fair problem solving skills. I hope this helps someone else.
