On my Kubota I cut the ends off some old 1/2" od lines that had fittings brazed on one end. I used compression fittings to make JIC. Flaring that steel tubing can be tough and not very reliable.

Parker, Imperial Eastman both used to make good flaring tools. Not sure about today though.

Other option is to purchase the ferrels for O-ring face seal and silver solder or braze them on.

I have used Parker ends and braze rings in the past with great success.

Discount hydraulic hose shows having the braze on ends.

I would use 12 or 14 mm hydraulic tubing and some DIN L series compression fittings.

Just cut the tube with pipe cutters, slide the tube in the fitting and tighten the nut. The ferrule inside crimps into the tube and does all the sealing. As easy as it gets. Not flares or brazing needed. I do like to to chamfer the inside diameter of the pipe to clean that edge.

I would agree the compression tube fittings are probably the most "homeowner friendly" option. Flaring steel tubing would be my LAST choice. Personally, I would use J.I.C. as much as possible, using standard male plugs drilled out and brazed onto the tubing. Have done that for years with good success. However, I understand not everyone has that ability, where the compression tube method is pretty much an "anyone can do it" method, but a bit more expensive.
