The "L" stands for late as in late production. I believe only the L's have the syncro transmission.

I have an MF 1040 and it won't go into 4WD anymore. I feel like its a linkage problem. When I move the lever down I don't feel any gear engagement. It doesn't seem to matter if the clutch is in or not.
