So brought in some firewood up from the barn the other night. Turned off the tractor, brought the firewood in and went back out. Warmed the glow plugs and turned the ignition and only a click from the solenoid. No crank over. Tried again and it turned right over. Turned it off. Tried again. Nothing, save the solenoid click.

Ran a test light to the starter lead. Turned the ignition and light comes on so power getting to the starter, check. Tested the battery, 12 volts strong, check.

Could there be a kill switch like a neutral kill that is on the fritz or is it likely the starter? Not familiar with all of the kill switches nor if any of them had been deactivated or modified by the previous owner. No idea where to find them on the 1250 to check and can't find any good references online.

Much appreciate any help or insight before I haul off and blow up $270 on a starter rebuild.

Thanks!

I don't believe I'd tie into the starter just yet. You probably have a switch for you hydrostatic drive. Follow your shift lever down and see if there is not some wires and a switch. Also, you pto has a safety switch. Make sure that little knob on the dash is turned off. The next thing that could be your culprit is your fuel solenoid. I put my bets on a fuel solenoid before a starter. The solenoid is about 150 dollars and a pain in the neck to change. I have seen and heard the fuel solenoid causing trouble more frequently than the starter. Hope this helps.

Put your test light on the small single wire terminal on the starter. If it’s getting power when you turn the key and hear the click, the starter should be turning and engaging. If not, the solenoid or the large battery cable is faulty. If it’s not getting power, then look for an interlock as posted above.

A loose or corroded connection can also be causing your trouble. Check you battery clamps and make sure they are clean and tight. Also check your connection at the starter and make sure they are clean and tight. Check your ground connection where the cable grounds to the tractor. A loose or corroded connection can cause you problems.
